The books sold like aged milk outside of Poland, before the games came out. The original english translation was bad and there would have been no incentive whatsoever to reinvest into this franchise outside of Poland, if the name hadn't become known and interest on a grand scale sparked thanks to the games, each one successively more prominent. The books got covers based on the game art, which amusingly managed to piss off Sapkowsky, as his ego got bruised by this. Well, that and the fact that he was an idiot for selling the game rights for some booze change. Hollywood likes it safe and Witcher was presicely a good candidate for an adaption, because they could bank in on an established fan community making noise. Do you know how many fucking fantasy books are out there? Why do you think out of all those, many better written, the Witcher was chosen? Without the games the only tv adaption of the Witcher would be the polish one. Besides, a reason why Cavil went balls deep into the project was because he was being a nerd about the games, further making it easier to market this series to people who didn't know there's fantasy books outside of LotR and GoT. I liked how the series turned out, but it did get a good running start thanks to the games.
