Because the military still offers experiences that cant be found anywhere else. I joined and did a tour of Afghanistan even though I knew the whole thing was pointless, I dont regret it though because I got paid a shit load and got to go sit in a desert warzone.

The Klendathu Drop Scene was one of the Reasons I chose to join the Marines rather than the Air Force or Navy.

I had the GT score and line scores to be a Nuclear Engineer in the military, but I chose to shoot things instead. I wanted to be a man on the ground fighting.

It was not isolated either, some of the smartest people I ever met in the military, were machine gunners, Artillery men, and Infantry. Something about proving yourself.

Rico in Starship Troopers really identified with the feeling. Could have gone to Harvard, but went in to the Infantry instead.

P.S. I should have been a nuclear engineer, fuck me I made a terrible choice in hindsight. I love what I did, but If you ever join the military get a real job.

I did meet an Army qt like dizzy but she was Korean and more racist then I could be.

I joined for GI Bill and free healthcare.

Right now I'd guess that 2/10 recruits are the "serve my country" types. Everybody else was their for benefits, foreigners trying to get citizenship, and Legacies who felt it was their obligation to continue the family tradition.
