They’ve already mined the place up, they’re left over from ages ago. After I separated, I went to work in Africa doing security for oil companies. You’d just see kids, old people, young people, whoever with legs, arms, whatever missing just sitting on the side of the street doing fuck all. Land mines take someone out all the time, I suspect whoever you were gonna go work for wanted to clear new paths to resource extraction sites under the guise of “humanitarian aid” or whatever.
I used my GI Bill to get a masters and then worked in HQ doing security for a bit. Quarantine has us completely shut down and I’m probably gonna lose my job. Luckily, I applied for a few PhD programs last year and got accepted so I have a landing spot. No one is gonna hire me for this much money or for even a remotely similar position, I only got this gig through connections I made in Africa.

This. Was out to eat and these two guys in uniform were there. My gf at the time wanted to pick up their tab as a thank you for serving. Talked her out of it by telling her that either they were attention seeking by wearing the uniform or were recruiters on lunch and we shouldn't thank people whose job it is to get kids signed up to die in some fucking desert protecting our corporate interests.
