They work as a looming threat, and I love the scenes where Sam kills the White Walker and Jon saves Mormont from a wight they stupidly brought south of the Wall. But it was always gonna end up a disappointment. Like you said, what makes the story stand out are other things, like Tyrion betting on Trial by Combats and Robb Stark breaking marriage pacts.
But as bad as it was, they could have at least kept some of the themes that made the early seasons great - plotting, betrayals, people vying for power - instead of making it a boring good vs. evil fantasy fight.
