I also meant to say childhood friendship but typed too fast and didn't proofread, HxHs gon+killua friendship is just 2 young boys with different walks of life being semi co-dependent on eachother, it's really a nice and fun friendship but get's kind of darker later into the series

Suikoden is at least partially inspired by Water Margin. If you want something with themes about brotherhood and loyalty, then consider watching the 2010 Three Kingdoms adaption. 50% of scenes are Shu Han fanwank, which sucks, but their suckiness just makes the Cao Wei and Sun Wu scenes stand out more. Gaun Yu letting Cao Cao escape capture because he felt indebted to him was kino. Every ep is on youtube.

Delita and ramza never got the opening friendship montage that suikoden 2 had. You were just told they were friends. Suikoden showed it with animated sprites that were only used for that sequence. You dont see that level of mastery anymore, not even in Indies.

Im 33. I was a rich Idort. I played and still own everything from that era at release. Even imports. Suikoden is neither a hidden gem nor overrated. It got good reviews in the magazines of that era and several sequels. Its only peer at that time was Grandia. Everyone else was trying to copy FF7 and move towards CG and 3D.
