Why did Landa strangle her if he was going to defect anyway?

This scene makes me rock fucking solid to this day. Not sure why, though.

Serious case of FPBP here. All four hit the nail on the head.

What a lot of people don't understand is that Landa wasn't loyal to Hitler or Nazism or Germany; he was self-serving. In other words, everything he did was orchestrated to serve himself and his own interests.

See, Landa was a master manipulator. Tarantino clues you in on this by how well he manipulates the other characters. So in essence, he wasn't acting logically by strangling Nic Cage's slampiece from National Treasure, he just did it because he wanted to. You see, it served his own self-interests, which was very in line with his character.

I'll be 100% honest here, when I came into the thread I was ready to give a simple FPBP, but after looking at these replies there are SPQPs (several posts quality posts).

Let me elaborate.

All five of these wildcats honed in on a central theme of the story: that Landa is a self-serving psychopath; like a cat who toys with its kill. He doesn't love Hitler, he doesn't hate jews, he just likes to be a self-serving psychopath with no allegiance to either Hitler or Germany, but conversely no hatred of jews.

Now, here's where things really heat up.

Landa is also good at performing and orchestrating violence. You may think that I'm a fucking film savant for picking up on this shit, but remember that stated the same thing and he's a colossal fucking faggot. So kind of like how Walter White doesn't really care about meth, Landa doesn't really care about killing the jews. There's some subtext that you need to be intelligent to pick up on, but basically Landa is a bad guy in the movie.

Now get this, all of this ties into his self-serving psychopathic and orchestrational tendencies, because these traits are typically associated with bad guys in film.

They even have a clue in the dialogue. Hans Landa purporting in the film's classic opening scene how much he loves the moniker of "Jew Hunter" and using it as a means of intimidation. But then in the later scene with Aldo and Utivich he claims the nickname was something he was saddled with and resents.

Landa is a sadist, but he's an opportunist first and foremost. On top of taking pleasure in the kill simply because he enjoyed the game, he probably also killed Von Hammersmark because he didn't want anything to stand in the way of him making a deal with the Allied forces.

Think of it this way - Landa was a conductor, and instead of having an orchestra made up of instruments like a horn section, a strings section and possibly a pianist his instruments were violence.

While technically a Nazi, his magnum opus wasnt the Reich or the SS but toying with his prey, serving his own interests that he orchestrated by kidnapping Brad Pitt or whoever. In the final crescendo, however Brad Pitt proved that sometimes you get served with your own petard, and while in some sense he wasnt a Nazi, just out to prey on his own orchestra, like a cat to the flame he was branded with the swastika, which technically served him right
