When did this mentality persist as reasonable criticism among entertainment? I didn't watch Oliver & Company as a child or X-Files as a teen because I related to the protagonist.

Consequence of medias as escapism I'd say

Narcissism mostly

Hylics don't actually have the ability to imagine things, meaning they also don't have true empathy. They can only begin to approach empathy if a character resembles them.

Women are retarded. It's just how it is lad.

I remember the ATLA writing team saying that relatability =/= likability, saying it's an easy trap for modern writers to fall into. Considering some of the characters I've like the best aren't necessarily people I relate to, I'd say it's true. Though some relatability is needed, on occasion. This isn't really an on-topic example, but part of the reason something like the 40k universe is both so interesting and so supremely retarded is because nothing about it is relatable, and ironically the only way it's able to make its expanded universe survive in a form that concerns ANY character on a more personal level is by creating memorable characters that buck the ludicrosity of the setting. Space Marines aren't relatable, so you have to buck the trend and make one that is (Salamanders excluded). Commissars aren't relatable, so you have to buck the trend and make one that is. It's funny to me that the two most famous commissars in the setting are two dudes who don't act like the typical le *blam* commissars everybody memes about.

I guess the point I'm making is the relatability element is important in a setting to some degree, it's just probably not AS important as a lot of writers today make it out to be.

the relation you're supposed to feel in that comic is humanity
in oliver as someone in troubled times
in x-files as someone seeking the truth (or something I've never seen it)

People like to do this with this syllogisms all the time, where x + y = z
>you don't like marvel? you must be a DC fag
I don't know why. I have some theories but this really isn't my field.

Women are supposed to be high in empathy biologically, which is why they naturally made for better caretakers of children.

its entirely a woman/narcissist thing that's been projected onto other ethnicities so they can simultaneously be narcissists and virtue signal.

Dangerously redpilled post.

It's just an excuse, as with many other reasons.

They want to replace anything significant with people who look like them because they can only engage in cultural appropriation and replacement. The reason whites get accused of this so often is because it is a form of projection - the racist, underhanded tactics that you get accused of come straight out of the playbook that usurpers are using.

The problem is that relatability has become entirely superficial where it's now, "Does this people look like me?" and has regressed into a tribal mentality.

A basic example would be Black Panther is, "Finally, a black superhero little black kids can look up to!". Ignoring the fact that black kids have a plethora of real and fictional people of their skin color to look up to, if we go by this logic, then Black Panther is ONLY a hero to little black boys. Shouldn't the mentality just be "Black Panther is a superhero any kid will look up to, even white kids!". I don't think 6-year old black kids give a shit if Captain America looks like them, only that he's cool.

I can’t think of any characters who I really couldn’t relate to, except maybe tommy wiseau, but I can still even relate to him. All you need is some empathy I suppose.

I think you're getting tripped up by your inability to recognize marketing, pandering, and the use of racial representation as a criticism shield.

I'm a white male married to a latina and I asked her about this one time. she says that needing a character to "look" like her has literally never occurred to her, and actually prefers white cast cause we're the "default people" in her mind. making random characters niggers or whatever is immersion breaking

they would only need empathy for kids for that

Women are only good at faking it to gain security and attention for themselves. Women being somehow these gentle caretakers is an absolute meme. There's a reason why it's the mother who kills their infant kid in the majority of the cases.

That's just internalized racism. If she wasn't married to you she would be saying different.

I hope you understand drowning can be a metaphor right? For feelings of distress, feeling, helplessness, inevitability, and so on.

Or wait, the issue is the skin color? Damn.

I'm drunk and I write gibberish lol.

>internalized racism
hello faggot department?

The 'default' thing is a pretty odd remark, but I never understood this either. I'm pretty sure the reason people like all this sci-fi shit that they keep ruining is due to the fact that it's totally unrelatable. This hyperdiversity nonsense is pushed by people who either don't actually like what they claim to be into or by people who 'grew up' and just exploit their former interests because it seems like an untapped market.

>not being able to relate to every character in every story you have ever experienced

holy freaking based, I just read the nag hammadi in it's entirety recently.

Got a good link?

All of these things being conflated with audience and critic reaction either thanks to paid shills (Not the Yas Forums meme, I mean actual ones on YouTube or interviews or talkshows or whatever), company wars, fan reaction, and bloggers who aren't associated with the company but utilize the social media reaction as clickbait.

There are people like pic related who are all over the place and their loud voice determines what a studio THINKS audiences want because they're the only ones speaking. It's a mutual relationship where both outputs are affecting each other, it's not a direct "Studio does something --> Audience reacts". It's:

>Studio is doing something
>Random partisan makes a comment
>Many people agree with comment
>Studio reacts on comment
>Partisan critiques reaction
>Studio overcompensates
>Partisan praises overcompensation
>Studio and partisan pat selves on the back for changing the world

Do I have to remind you about the artificial outrage of Ghostbusters that was engineered by both Sony and random bloggers?

It's not even like hyper diversity in sci-fi is a modern thing. Star Trek did it AND they bragged about it in interviews, same as today. But you overlooked that because the actual characters were fun to watch, so who gives a shit about the gross marketing.

People still like Wonder Woman even though it had the same "girl power finally a hero for girls" marketing because WW (in her movie) was a fun character. Captain Marvel fell on her ass.

>good link
good is debatable, this was good enough for me personally.
gnosis.org/naghamm/nhl.html

Thanks my nigga.

Yeah, toward only their own children, guys they want to fuck, and their father depending on how he treated her. They couldn't care less about any man who doesn't fall into one of those categories.

But doesn't this board get insanely angry every time there's a non-white character in a show? Are you guys insulting yourselves?

>Captain Marvel fell on her ass.
Legends say she's still falling to this day.

>Help I'm drowning
wow what a compelling character study.

>I didn't watch Oliver & Company as a child or X-Files as a teen because I related to the protagonist.
I watched Oliver and Company because I wanted to fuck that dog.

It's pretty retarded, I'm so god damn gay and I don't relate to any fucking gay characters out there on the screen, I have no problem proxying into straight men, straight women, black men, black women, or even lesbian women, just not gay men. I'm sure I could with the right writing, but it just isn't an issue or concern.

Nobody here is claiming the blackwashing is bad because of muh representation. The issue is that they are changing established things for a really blatant political agenda and it always comes off as incredible obvious pandering while they disregard actually making a good product.

>But doesn't this board get insanely angry every time there's a non-white character in a show?
No? The only reason people care about shit like that is because it's blatant propaganda and it's repeatedly pushed in our face like it's some major empowering thing.
>WOW THE FIRST GAY BLACK SUPERHERO ON PRIMETIME TV THAT'S RIGHT YOU STUPID NAZI INCELS WE'RE HERE WE'RE QUEER GET USED TO IT THIS IS EVERYTHING

The people making TV shows and movies now have no imagination and have no interests outside of identity politics.

mostly this. There's a few assholes that just hate anything and everything that isn't a cis white straight male, but even they were fine with charactes like buffy, or ripley, or cyborg, or green lantern, or annalise keating.

Most people loved Sabrina back in the 90s. They hate her now because all she does is talk about how evil men are.

Adam don't

I have literally never related to a fictional character in my life.

I thought escapism meant projecting yourself onto a character that ISN'T you. Someone you WISH to be.

That only works if you have imagination. These people have no inner monologue and no creativity, so they have to see themselves exactly as they are in the media.

Not even to yourself?

It's advertising philosophy: give someone something they love and they'll become a fan.

Turns out, the current consumer generation loves themselves more than anything.

>Watch Star Wars you see a cast of characters
>Watch Disney Wars you see a selected group of representatives approved by Disney's Council of Diversity and Inclusion

nigga, you know that actual ethnics don't give a shit about representation, right? this is entirely the result of projection by narcissists.

The fuck is hylics

The projection in this post should warrant an FBI investigation

Chads.

Are you implying ethnics can't be narcissists?

Companies trying to pander to zoomers who want to be able to identify with every protag isnt a projection of anything, it's a business decision. Stop babbling

>race and gender of character in comic is irrelevent
>all Yas Forums cares about is their race and gender
mentall illness

Normalfags, NPCs, people with little-to-no divine spark. They lack the ability to imagine things, they lack the ability to dialogue with themselves to work through problems.

Attached: 1585577606921.jpg (750x864, 98.46K)

>stob babbling
>is babbling
...

fuck glowniggers

This always makes me smile because I imagine a green apple instead of red one.

Stonetoss vs hehesilly who wins?

i imagine a green/red mix one. i think it's because i paint.

its easier for me to use my imagination with my eyes open, am i autistic?

Hylics are spiritually circumcised humans, hence why they're incapable of relating to anything that deviates from the convention or doesn't align with their life experiences, beliefs and preconceived notions. If they cannot identify with it then it might as well not exist to them.
