It had a lot of self contained stories, with a few running plots. There wasn't a main story attached to everything until they started pushing it in 2008 with While Guthix Sleeps.
If they had to adapt one plot, I'd go with either the Elf quests or Dragon Slayer. But the best way to adapt it would be more episodic, jumping between different quests.

i started up an OSRS account recently. just immersed myself in the quests and reached endgame quests without doing any grinding. in fact i barely trained my skills directly at all. quest rewards are enough to get you everywhere except the high level bossing which i never cared for anyway
also quest guides are for faggots, i almost never used them and had no problem

osrs is full of kids, rs3 is full of people that have been playing for 15 years on the same main and aren't able to kick the habit
