I work in biotech (though not vaccines, that's a niche field commercially) and am wfh currently in San Diego. The issue with skipping animal trials is mostly about safety, what you said isn't really a concern. We do animal trials because it's the next step from in vitro testing, which is like petri dish testing on human cells. But we don't go straight to humans because there's unexpected side effects and toxicity all the time (all the clinical trial failures means that with the loser drugs, it takes $1-2 billion on average to take a new viable drug to market). So we test on animals first so we if they die or suffer severe complications before testing in humans.

This actually leads to plenty of probably viable drugs never being developed because it may not work right in the animal model chosen when it could in humans, but there's really no better alternative until we know a lot more about human biology and can model it accurately in a computer. In a time of crisis like this though, the math changes and clinical trials can be accelerated. In theory this could mean the vaccine has some unforeseen side effect (no, not autism) when taken to the whole human race beyond a few dozen or hundred test candidates, but this is still preferable to the ongoing situation with COVID-19.
We don't know currently how long the immune response will last. Comparing to other viruses (especially coronaviruses like SARS-CoV) is useful for estimates, but ultimately not predictive.
