Tony has some positive qualities which are commented on the show, he's a strong, confident alpha male. But hes also petty, vindictive, selfish, self-pitying, unfaithful, and flirts with downright sociopathy at times. You're supposed to view him as an extremely flawed person

David chase actually would understand that it’s natural people would empathize with his protagonist. He also called out hypocritical people who only started to dislike Tony when they felt they were “supposed to.”

He's a two-bit mob boss from a fourth-rate neighborhood whose whole family is barely considered more than a crew by the big players. His trip to Italy makes it more than obvious what stupid, uncultured, small-time troglodytes him and his guys are.

Honestly it felt like David Chase's bitterness at his audience was practically palpable throughout the entire final season. It seemed like he went out of his way to make every single character as scummy as possible. I'm assuming he was trying to really hammer home the "these are bad people and this is how things end up for bad people" message but it just felt like he was destroying or completely changing a lot of characters as a result. Felt like watching a child smashing down his sand castle on the beach because some passerby thought it looked more like a fort than a castle.

That cabin fever review was painful to watch.

I watched Sopranos a bunch of times and with every iteration it's easier to see him for what he is - a criminal, just a very charismatic one.

Tony was doing what he had to to survive and keep his family intact. As terrible a person as he can be when you look around at the people around him they are almost always worse.

Tommeh also gets saved by deus ex machina every season and wouldn't be out of place in Death Note with his otherworldly 4D chess schemes. Tony comes across as a very human fool with moments of brilliance amongst his many many flaws.

His admirable qualities can be aspired and looked up to whilst his less than savoury ones should be scorned. We constantly meet people in our day to day lives that can be looked up to but are still knuckle dragging apes. Them achieving greatness despite their shortcomings is admirable. If you're inspired by Superman then perhaps you're the simpleton that needs a great extrapolation of grandeur to respect & appreciate a character
