Actual a lie, I have read well past the anime adaptation.
After the first episode, there is no more rape, there are few almost-rapes and some brief nudity, but nothing compared to horror of the the first episode. It's essentially just a hook to give the impression the series is edgy, when it really isn't, but standard isekai.

Also, in the orginal novel, the rape is minor incident and not the focus, to dismay of the author, the mangaka turned the grotesqueness of its to eleven.

The Goblins in the setting have several life stages.

Baby/Child gobbos where they're mostly harmless
Goblin which is where you find the majority of them
Hobgoblin a life stage in which they become massive and you rarely see them
Goblin Shaman a rare type that evolve from the base Goblin instead of Hobgoblin and isnt larger than a goblin may even be weaker but it has higher intelligence and can use magic
There's also an even larger goblin type
And several other "intelligence varieties" some larger but without magic
There's also a Goblin Chieftan type who isn't as large as a hobgoblin but larger than normal goblins that's not only intelligent but good at tactics and strategy
There's also rare types that can learn how to create things like boats and weapons and armor but theyre also rare and they seem to come about by outside influence

Indeed goblin evolution is a bit weird. They use host species to breed but their actual evolution seems to be triggered by exposure to things or surviving certain events or conditions. The Leader type that was creating an army to take the town in the series proper came about by surviving the destruction of a prior goblin colony and being the only survivor this seemed to kickstart his intelligence as if goblins only evolve intelligence when there are low or no other goblins around. Basically the ones who will start new colonies. What makes them evolve magic or larger body types is a mystery.

Yup, people made a huge deal about this, and I went and looked for it to see if it was true. It was extremely disappointing. It's like everyone watched/read the first episode and then assumed that was everything the show had to offer.

It's the same problem with many isekai. Essentially Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero start strong with interesting premises that try paint the idea that this isekai is somehow different, but after 6 episodes, or so, they become standard isekai and everything that made them exceptional is undermined. It's almost like the writer uses all their skill into drafting interesting beginning for their story in order to suck it as many people as possible and then stop caring.

It has less stuff like this than a lot of western shows, it's less graphic about it and it's contained to the first episode to set up the threat. After that episode it's just goblin hunting, partying up with other adventurers, going on adventures and eventually defending a town from a goblin invasion. It's all pretty well done. The only thing they leave out are the armored shield goblins who tie naked women to their shields act as actual human shields that mess with their enemies will to fight. That's in the manga though.
