The first film was envisioned as a prequel to the game, and I think the original idea was that if there was a sequel, it would be about Jill in the now zombie invested mansion.

At the end of Retribution all the actual non-OC Resident Evil characters get together for a final stand in the White House, and it seems that in the next movie they will finally get to do something. Then the open narration to Final Chapter drops that it was a trap and they are all dead. Leon, Ada and Jill die offscreen, for fucks sake.

these movies got so much wrong it's not even funny. Barry was actually a bad guy in the original game. Sure he regrets his decision later on but that still doesn't erase the fact he spent most of the first half of the game trying to kill you.
