There was some guy arguing in this very thread days ago, that Ginnie sack was not written and cast to have an have an eating disorder/food addiction that was destroying her body and caused seething rage and insecurity in Johnny which fueled his spiteful smoking habit and undue anger at any reference to his family. This user argued that while yes, smoking was a big health crisis 'in the nineties' (as he called it), but that obesity was not at all a health issue at that time, and that only long after Ginnie's casting did it begin to be recognized as one. He said it was a coincidence they cast a fat person and that people were 'retroactively applying MODERN MORALS into the sopranos where it doesn't belong.'
Just wanted to call that user a retard. God he was so fucking dumb and he argued that Ginnie wasn't written to be fat, that it was an accident of casting. What a colossal retard. He must have been twelve. Thank you for your time.

Ginnie is Johnny's hyperobese wife who rushes to eat a hidden duffel bag of candy bars within the first half hour of him leaving the house in the morning, who Johnny promised to quit smoking if she lost weight, but didn't. They both secretly stick to their habit while the other isn't looking, and Johnny died from lung cancer because of it. Both of their daughters have eating disorders, one obese and one anorexic. Johnny has a long arc where he almost kills Ralphie for saying she's fat. Johnny is constantly seething, smokes in response to anger, and gets a sense of self-confidence for 'providing for her', which ultimately amounts to buying a massive gauche mansion for her to secretly eat candy in alone. Johnny and Ginnie are addicted to consumption, him smoking and her food. She is fat. End of story.

I'm not saying everything in Sopranos is set in stone, but Johnny and Ginnie were clearly written to show that the absolute height of criminal wealth in the modern mob, without the basic morality of simple living, basically means committing all this murder and crime just to overpay for a ridiculous gauche mansion for you and your family to destroy themselves in. Johnny legitimately seems most happy being alone with and affectionate to his wife, but his neurotic concern with taking care of the family at such a rich criminal level, has him constantly seething over this job that he has to run with anger and fear, that amounts to this pointless reward of petty wealth, when all they like to do is eat and smoke and lie to eachother that they do it. There's a lot of great information there, and the user arguing that obesity wasn't a mass american health concern in 2000 at the time of her casting, was not only a painfully ignorant child in that era, but also a clueless rube who managed to sit through Ginnie's scenes and receive nothing at all over the fact that her weight absolutely dominates her character and any interaction people have with Johnny's family.
