Why was this movie so fucking good?
Why was this movie so fucking good?
It came out of nowhere and everyone was expecting it to be a dumpster fire. It was a movie based on a theme park ride for fuck's sake. Then when it came out Depp gave a performace we'd never seen before, Barbossa was a great villain, humor wasn't over the top, action scenes were solid, and the pacing was perfect.
try wearing a corset
All of this, and the script deserves a special mention. It's just a really good script. The characters work, the scenes work, the twist completely works.
Shame they had to hit the reset button for the unnecessary sequels.
Also the setting was well made, coherent and very tryhard as they say
It's bretty gud but 20 minutes too long for what is essentially a summer blockbuster action movie. Same with the second one, which I think is superior.
fixd
The music was 10/10 also.
1+2+3 were great
the rest were shit
This scene

Yeah let's not do non English posters thanks
>this scene
This movie is scientific proof that females peak at 17 years of age
3 is literally the worst of all of them, don't dare put it in the same category as the first two.
Kill yourself you uncultured swine
This.
Also, boats.
3 is a fucking garbage heap and you've got shit taste. The film is an absolute fucking mess and its one saving grace is the action scenes are alright.
>unnecessary sequels
Shut up. If there was no sequel we wouldn't get the kino cgi villain. Even Barbosa cameo in the end is one of the most kino cameos ever, gave me chills.
The ranking is 2>1>3>5>4 for me
3 had some incredibly kino scenes that wrap the whole thing into a nice package. Only brainlets who thought the series was "too complex" didn't like it.
2+3 are pretty shit though
like you can tell the whole humor turned much more looney tunes right away
plus the faux-love-triangle is the last thing anybody wanted in a pirates movie
>5 above 4
Both of them were pointless but 4 is the better one. 5 is terrible because Jack can't carry a movie as the lead, especially in his flanderized state.
I'd put 4 over 5. Neither I like, but 4 at least can "kinda" work as a sorta weird spin off, and had some kino elements to it.
MAKE A NOTE OF THAT MANS BRAVERY
Whenever I see that cover/poster, I'm always reminded at the terrible photoshopped cleavage on Kierra.
he did specify 'unnecessary sequels' which I take to mean 4 and 5.
Fun fact: The guy he kills is the sailor from the 1st and 3rd movie, the "That's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen" guy.
These movies are chocked full of neat easter eggs that make it very rewatchable.
>Only brainlets who thought the series was "too complex" didn't like it.
There's nothing complex about it, it's just a mess. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you haven't rewatched it in a long time.
The last good Swashbuckling film(s). Hell, the last good Swashbuckling piece of media I can name is... Batman: White Knight. I'm still made they cancelled that Armada Of The Damned game...
I just assumed so because most of PotC1 fags say only the first one is kino and the rest is trash which is not true. 2 is better than 1 for me.
I seriously watched it in theaters ten times when I was little, what a great movie, but man it must have driven my parents crazy.
Nah. 2 is good but 1 is Great.
Same but my sister and I also had the VHS so we watched it a lot at home. Could've been far worse for our parents though.
why did no other movie studios try and follow suit and make their own pirate kinos? around the time these movies were coming out and making gangbusters, it seemed like no other studio dared to copy the themes and release pirate kinos of their own. seems baffling not to have done so in that time period
Fuck me, is that true?
>These movies are chocked full of neat easter eggs that make it very rewatchable
Pray continue good user.
Also checked.
Mein Neger, Jones and his crew were great.
How does their CGI still hold up so well?
1 is the only one which qualifies as great. The rest are basically just glossy blockbusters thrown together to capitalise on the first movie's success. They aren't nearly as tightly or efficiently constructed as a result. Sparrow inexplicably going back into retard mode (despite more or less faking it for the entire first movie), because that's what audiences liked most about Depp's performance, shows how lazy they are.
Majority of what is in this thread. Plus catchy soundtrack.
>how does their CGI still hold up so well
No idea, honestly i feel like cgi is getting worse anyway, if they bring Davy Jones back the cgi would probably be inferior.
>Take a drink everytime someone says "sea turtles", "bloody pirates", "why is the rum gone", Jack calling Will either a whelp or a eunuch, etc. seriously the movies are chocked with these
>The Sword Will makes at the beginning of the first movie is the sword Norington uses to stab Davy Jones in his death scene, which Davy Jones takes and mentions "Nice Sword", and takes the sword, and it's the one used to stab Davy Jone's heart
>When they give jack (the monkey) to Calypso as a trade in the 2nd movie, the first thing he does is run to boots to play with them, that are of a not-yet-reanimated Barbosa's
>A deleted scene in 3 (restored in the full version) has Jack talk to Will about what a man will do, calls back to a scene in the first movie where Jack and Will talk about what a man can and can't do
>The scene in 3 where Jack escapes from Davy Jone's brig is "leverage", calling back to the very first movie where Will breaks him out of the jail using leverage
You can argue about how well executed the movies are, but you can definitely tell with the trilogy that there was a lot of polish and attention to detail in both the sets and script. George Lucas would be proud of how much poetry there is in these movies.
I also like the detail of those 2 English soldiers that question Jack on the docks in the first movie who in the end of the third become pirates themselves.
4 and 5 were shite but damn the first three had a lot of heart.
>Sparrow inexplicably going back into retard mode
By the second movie he isn't so retarded yet, and from the third onwards he died and became crazy from the Davy Jone's locker.
>he died and became crazy from the Davy Jone's locker
Good point but that user was right, Jack gets severely flanderized as the series goes on.
this sucked
The first was obviously sent through the full Disney mill, it's why it's so tight and polished, with so many references to the kino rides. It could have gone either way. Also, semi cunny and a based soundtrack.
2
The first movie ended with him revealing that he was actually a badass all along, using his buffoonery as a disguise
In the 2nd movie he's a fucking idiot for real since apparently audiences forgot the first movie
This
This nonsense and the pirate nato/calypso in the third one were pretty much my only real problems with the trilogy.
>There will never be as much SOUL in movies as there was in the early-mid 2000s
I wanna go back
Calypso ruined the third movie, I was otherwise enjoying the movie until the last minute mcguffin got introduced and that just made my eye roll.
2000-2003
>lord of the rings trilogy
>curse of the black pearl
>the last samurai
>master and commander
>gladiator
how the fuck do blockbusters have so much SOUL back in the day?
This
Should have just left it as a one off. It's perfect singular story.
I totally forgot that Johnny Depp was nominated for Best Actor for this movie
They just did.
It's literally just the Marvel formula that's killed the typical blockbuster. They make so much money that other ventures (outside of whatever the rock is starring in) aren't viable anymore.
The raimi Spiderman movies were great blockbusters and had much more soul than current Marvel films. Everything after the first Iron Man film (which was and still is a great standalone film) has been a blur of robotic corporate slosh.
CGI was good but not good enough to replace everything yet.
does Yas Forums never watch youtube

Black Sails is top tier kino
I know, I've seen it and I love it, but is it really "Swashbuckling"? The AC games kinda count, now that I think about it.
I've only left the final episode to watch, but man the series is a mixed bag. Sometimes it's really good, and other times it just drags. I can only watch so many brothel scenes until I lose my patience. The show has this annoying habit of introducing minor characters that you think have no role in the story other than that one scene where they first appeared in, only to turn them into major characters with entire plot lines, monologues, and character development made just for them. It drives me nuts. People have been selling the show to me wrongly. It's not a fucking pirate show, it's a show SET in the pirate era that deals with characters from every walk of life. Pirates are only 30% of the show.
>>It's literally just the Marvel formula that's killed the typical blockbuster
a $40 billion company is literally relying on marvel to be its tentpole blockbusters. they cant afford to have any of them flop. they can't make bold risky choices in marvel because they cant have it flop like last jedi and solo did.
I haven't seen the Yag Subaru one
Is it worth it
>79% on rt
Kek most MCU movies are better than that.
Yes
This is a yag thread now
>Using rt to judge a movies quality
I'm gonna guess bait
