Normally it's because they overeat what they have and doesn't actually relate to religion in any real way.
For example Muslims ate pork until they started to overeat the oinkers. When it was obvious they were going to run out they used religion as an excuse to not eat it. The plan was to allow them to eat it again after the population increased (the oinker population, not the Muslims). Hindus did the exact same thing with cows and beef, although they aren't monotheistic. I'm not sure about Jews, they probably couldn't get anyone to get the shellfish for them or something so they had to wait for some goys to come along who had the ability to survive on their own and weren't parasites like they were.
Anyway, the reason they never went back to eating the "banned" food was because the next generation grows up with it as being normal so they have no problem with it. Sort of like "what you never had you never miss". Once you take into account that it takes years to replenish stock and doesn't happen over a few days or weeks you understand how easy it is for rules like this to become the norm.
If you think it's not possible, that people wouldn't stand for such a dramatic change in their lives and the next generation would just ignore these "temporary measures" and would rebel, despite never having experienced them, then all you need to do is take a look at zoomers who think being molested by the (((TSA))) every time you take a flight or the government spying on every single person was always done. It wasn't. But they don't know any different so they accept it as having always been that way. The only real difference is that the changes we have now were made by the higher power of government in the name of "safety" and the changes then by the higher power of not going to heaven or whatever. Same thing, different face.
What one generation accepts the next generation will embrace etc.
