Get a good list of recommended TOS episodes, watch the TOS films then move on to TNG. It really is worth having TOS in your locker because it leads to kino when Spock shows up in TNG, among other things.

Soong should have been Lore, the higher level synths should have been related somehow to the crystalline entity, borg (as tired of them as I am) should have been more central and less pointless. Raffi and the spic captain should have been a single character, space legolas cut out, and Seven should have been part of Picard's crew.
