What happened?

For me Seasons 12-14 were zombie seasons but even in those about half of the episodes are rewatchable. They're just not as sincere and naive and don't have the comfy atmosphere

redpill me on what happened to Sunny. i never watched the show religiously, my brother loved the show so we'd watch it when we hung out but that was years before people said Sunny sucks now.

I'm close to an original sunnyhead, I started watching new episodes live during season 3 and imo season 7 was the last of the truly good (yes, yes, Frank's Brother, I know, but the ratio of good to bad in this season is still very strong).
8 and 9 still had a few classics (gang dines out, mac day, etc) but there's a lot of shit (charlie rules the world, gun fever 2).
the final three eps of season 9 (flowers for charlie, lethal weapon 6, gang squashes their beefs) were terrible and made me question the direction of the show.
10 started with the gang beats boggs, which seems like a great premise but was very disappointing. this was the first season I stopped following live, although I did eventually watch them all. Overall mediocre to straight up bad, but I will give a shout out to Family Fight and the gang misses the boat, which was maybe a bit too introspective
Season 11 I didn't watch live but caught a few, the suburbs episode was OK--I think at this point, episodes like that could've been classic status but they were just stale at this point. this is the first season where there are episodes I still haven't seen to this day.
season 12 I swore off. I saw an episode or two with my friends who are still devoted and say it's good, and I truly noticed the distinct lack of laughs. Very bizarre
I haven't seen a single episode of seasons 13 and 14.
Now I see clips like the OP and it looks terrible. My friends say they've leaned into it and are very self aware, but I donno, I just miss the early seasons.
Perhaps the high school reunion was the last of the good? smash 'em up

I kept waiting for something funny to happen when Mac did that 10 minute gay dance and then it just ended. Was wtfing hard. I used to watch it on and off but stopped completely after that.

I hope it never gets canceled just because I know how much the cast hates still being stuck working on it and none of them have been able to successfully branch off onto a wider acting career. I want them to be buried alive in this piece of shit.

I think they’re just running out of ideas and are just getting whatever hot topic is out there right now and making episodes based off it. Same thing that happened with South Park. As others have stated there is some solid 4-5/10 episodes in the later seasons, but nothing too great. I still watch it though, I put it on before I go to sleep everyday and it helps me go to bed. Something comfy about it I guess.

I mean they've all made enough money, not to mention royalties from syndication. Charlie has started a decent movie career. There's no reason for them to keep doing it, unless they're delusional about how much worse its gotten.

The show prided itself on being politically incorrect and repulsive, it was meant to be an anti-friends sitcom. Then after season 11 it went full tumblr. Rob Mac has tweets eluding to the writers room being too white/male around the same time so they diversity hired a bunch of unfunny brown women to bomb the show. Its also the same time everyone on the show all tried to kickstart new shows away from the gang ie rats on a sinking boat.

Watch it and at the end of season 11 imagine they die on the boat and everything after it is them waking up in some pc, dystopic current year sitcom. They have some self referential jokes thrown in for nostalgia laughs but its so cringey it hurts. I dont get wrapped into pop culture shit but sunny was my go to for depression and now its just another cause of it... We will never have anything nice ever again.

Typically, I’m really no a political dude but I do see just doing a bunch of token hires as detrimental to a shows quality, but I think this just may be a case of then running out of ideas mostly. Maybe the diversity in writing has had some negative effects, but likewise it could just be them running out of ideas. It feels like that more so. Like people think making Mac gay was a result of a bunch of brown women but it could easily just be a Flanders effect as well.

I was specifically thinking about Glen and Kaitlin when I wrote that because they seem like cunts in real life and their shitty side projects keep failing.

This is a good summary of the start. Seinfeld on crack fits well but I love the 'anti-Friends' spin because I hated Friends and it's stupid drama. Sunny going completely insane and not giving a fuck while maintaining some wit was wonderful.

Charlie has built a decent non-Sunny career for himself and DeVito already had a full career before Sunny exposed him to a new generation of fans.

Actually, Max, Dennis, Dee and Charlie night all fall in this category. I think Charlie less so. Frank was pretty outrageous from the beginning.

They were alluding to it, they didn’t make him a full on limp wrist till season 11. It got annoying after that. The episode is OPs picture has a few laughs but anytime Mac spoke and said some off the wall gay shit it made me cringe.

This is true. They have had some funny episodes since then (Waterpark episode was season 4/5 tier) but it has lost touch with its “Irish Seinfeld on Crack” premise

Mac’s character and dialogue has gotten progressively more try-hard and poorly acted. You can see how Rob is thinking about how to get to his line/point without any sort of thought process.
Dennis is now an over the top caricature of himself, similar to how Charlie developed during the latter “good” seasons. However I’m ok with this as I love Dennis.
The last season, Dee was just wasted space. She had no point in a majority of the episodes and was just used as a vehicle for the other character’s motives.
Frank and Charlie’s chemistry is enough for them to get by. I will say Frank’s blatant racism isn‘t very funny because of how un-witty it is, seems like a DeVito throw in to appease his greaseball italian roots

But in OPs post, the episode goes like this (not sure if you’ve seen it):

I almost find it hard to believe they have a bunch of brown women now writing for them since they make him such a weirdo it’s unflattering you actual gay people I know irl.

Then, seasons 7 and 8 are, alright, I guess.
Seasons 9 and onwards it's the zombie era.
With season 13 being the point of no return, where the show finally dies.

overall the quality tanked with season 5. that's when the eps went below 80% good.
It's still like 1 or 2 episodes per season that have a lasting affect.
The boat one, charlie banging daddario, dee gives birth. There are plenty of good ones amongst the trash.
Now it's gotten below 30%. I haven't even tried to watch it, the FXX era is utter trash

this is probably the first show that I watched from the beginning that has lasted over ten years. I remember FX was desperate at one point and put the first few episodes online for free. So many memories watching it during high school but I stopped around season 5 or 6

Is it still worth checking out? I don't give a shit if they're old or look funny. It's rare to find a good 20ish minute comedy

I would give it a shot. Season 7 onward is hit or miss but there are still some funny episodes here and there. Some people hate certain episodes but I like them, Franks Brother being one.

It's solid through season 11. I watched season 12 and it wasn't terrible but it was mediocre enough where I understood that it was time to move on.
