the characterization of raiden in this movie is so fucking good, i don't understand why the games never took a cue from it. the raiden character in the games is TERRIBLE with the exception of MK1

in the movie, he acts like a god would act: extremely wise, mercurial, wrathful at times. generally disinterested but you can tell he has a soft spot for the heroes, like they were his favourite horse in a race. he doesn't view them as equals, but doesn't want to see them lose. every character seems to genuinely fear him, even shang tsung, although more willing to trade barbs with him, is wary of his power

raiden in the games is just a literal retard who despite living forever is a complete buffoon, utterly humourless, and gets outwitted and defeated constantly while spewing platitudes and other nonsense and generally acting like a naive 14 year old

It's a legitimately well structured and well made movie. It mightn't have the legs to compete with the best movies of the 90s but it's a 6/10 if you're wanting to be harsh. A very enjoyable movie that never gets old

Amongst pseuds, absolutely. They dig that shit up and reject anything MK that lacks gore, even if everything else is stellar (see: the Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe game)

Of course the issue if it was R rated would be that it would never reach a general audience and likely would have become just a cult film. And that's assuming the movie would have turned out as good as it did with a PG rating. Budgets would have been cut by a ton and the quality of the movie would have suffered as a result.

An R rating may also have encouraged the studio to push for a greater focus on grit and gore just for the sake of grit and gore. I suspect that's what will happen for this new movie, it'll lack the soul, elegance and storytelling quality of the original because it'll be so preoccupied with being gory and edgy and dark etc

I think makes good points but I think about how as a kid I and many my same age saw movies like Aliens, Predator, Robocop, or Terminator 2. I think if Mortal Kombat went for action movie gore rather than the horror movie gore of the games (seriously, just watch Hellraiser to see what game-accurate MK gore would be like) it could have been just that little bit better.
