Bale is a force of nature. FvF was a high testosterone shoot to put it mildly. I thought we had a good chemistry. I did give him some ribbing about his Batman voice on occasion. Called it his “big boy” voice. He gave me shit about the World Police parody. It was an honest to god 90’s movie in terms of the mentality on set. Very liberating, very “manly”.

The studio tried to intervene with “political” messaging in terms of the relationship between Chris and Cat. They wanted the relationship more antagonistic and a scene where Cat “fixes” a car and sees a problem that Chris didn’t see in the Garage. We both put our foot down on that however. Chris walking off set for four hours helped too.

Sorry you didn’t like the Martian. It was a nice lighthearted flick I thought and a delight to shoot. I’m back with Ridley at the moment. Like revenge and Zweihanders? You’ll love what we’re bringing.

I think movies are losing that testosterone, they are becoming lighter, set designs, camera movement, everything seems to be more and more simplistic, in the sense that in the past you had people committed to the hardships of cinema than today.
