Thread for the serious discussion of arthouse and classic cinema.
/film/
The editing in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is so retarded it actually becomes an experimental piece of cinema. Fascinating.
Currently watching pic related. What will I think of it?
>muh waifu: the movie
Boogie Nights is my favourite film of his.
Some of his creations are pretty good.
kino
For me, it's Fantastic Mr. Fox.
communism
I'm partial to Songs From The Second Floor myself
This.
Nice cinematography
Jim Cameron likes AvP more than Alien3 or Resurrection
Finally got around to watching Possession. That ending fucked me up.
Trying to go through the entry level arthouse chart as I've seen most of them already. Is mid-level worth it, or should I just start going through a director's filmography? What are some other good charts/lists for film?
>That ending fucked me up
Why?
The mid level is mostly a joke. Some movies are worth movies, some are excellent, but none are exactly fit for the kind of people who watch the intro and want more. I'm not sure if there's a good chart that sort of builds up on the intro part. If you say what you enjoyed I can recommend some more.
In general I think a good idea is to say "I want to watch Italian cinema, what's the best?". This will at least inform you of the major directors.
latest VHS pick ups: Akira, Belle de Jour, Fargo, In The Realm of The Senses, RED, and Dogma. What to watch first?
Made this because soviet kino should get more recognition.
What is your favorite Soviet film that doesn’t get enough attention or appreciation, also who is your favorite Russian director that isn’t Tarkovsky? I’ve been sleeping on Russian cinema for far too long
Dreyer theatrical
Thank you for including the names. Not sure people even bother making shit like this:
Not him but the names are on the posters.
Middle, bottom right, and bottom left have no names, unless you can type in the original language.
>no dovzhenko
>Not a single Georgiy Daneliya film
jesus christ what an abomination, not even to look at, less to save it.
Proper soviet compilation chart coming right here
So they have names, you are just uneducated.

Red me your faves
It was another time...
There are too many, I didn't watch them all, I'll let the ones I have watched until now. I liked all of them by far, so looks like it's a good chart
Soviet - Elim Klimov
Russian - there are a few, Valiria Gai Germanika, Ivan Vyrypaev, Vasily Sygarev, Anna Melikyan, Ivan Tverdovsky, Kirill Serebrennikov are some of the good modern russian directors. There are more.
There're a bunch of underappreciated soviet films in the list I posted (Listopad, Man of Marble for example, but they are underappreciated because while soviet - they are not russian. On is georgian and one is polish).
not a fan, "I Walk the Streets Of Moscow" is good but I found his other comedies like Afonya or Lucky Gentelmen fine but overrated. Kin Dza Dza is also fine, but I just don't really like it personally, it really struggled between comedy and serious sci-fi sometimes.

Only the historical epics he did later in his career. Neorealism is a hoax.
Which epics?
Maybe he's refering to his historical tv movies and stuff from the 60s like Viva l'Italia
Like The Age of Medici
This is good too
Which one is the best?

>Straub saw a film by Kiarostami and put it down to Pedro Costa, saying it’s a film of a tourist. I thought, wait a minute: Straub loves Tati and Tati’s films are all the films of a tourist. What’s wrong with that? It would be interesting to have an argument with Straub about it, although it’s usually impossible to have an argument with him. Whatever his position, he kind of sticks to it and doesn’t really interrogate it, once he arrives at it. He wrote something once to say how much he loved John Ford but he hated The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and when I first met him, I asked him, why did you hate that film?, and he couldn’t explain. And then, many years later, he told me he didn’t hate it anymore. But he never explained why.
Straub is literally just a /film/ poster.
Any chance Balthazar is still alive?
No
He dies in the end of the movie...
Movies are not real.
For me, it's Kalatozov
Say that to Ana Torrent
>According to Víctor Erice, Ana Torrent, who was six years old at the time of the shooting, believed the Frankenstein monster existed in reality. The first time she saw the actor playing the monster in full makeup, she was completely terrified and later she asked him why he had killed the little girl (in Frankenstein (1931) movie). The actor didn't know what to answer.
Dumb bitch
What a fucking retard
don't bully mentally challenged little girls that's mean and not funny
Maybe I have no soul, but I didn’t really enjoy this film, I feel like the dvd transfer didn’t do it justice. Idk can anyone tell me what they got out of it, and please no pedo answers either.
Stupid looking cunt.
>Moscow Doesn't Believe in Tears
Am I the only one that thought this film was alright. Looked gorgeous but everything else was just boring at best
ABSD vs Yi Yi, which would you pick as the superior film?
ABSD for me.
