Bush-era Carlson was a naive libertarian goofball, and his views have changed considerably, to the point of stating the free market was a tool, not a goal, and that if megacorps and foreign state capitalist powers are pushing around the smaller firms and workers in this country, there is no reason to shrug and accept it. I still like Stewart and agreed with him in lambasting necons, but he was one of the few who had the balls not to fall for this "vote blue no matter who" nonsense. Look at how Stewart skewered Obama when he brought him on as a guest after the election and bluntly grilled him on the expansion of war and surveillance, while Colbert and Oliver in the last election spouted DNC talking points almost to the letter (and leaks proved they took money).

Part of the problem with idpol is that the kneejerk wagon-circling tricks rubes into ignoring the corruption of their own and refusing to accept the possibility of an opponent who is wrong and misguided but ultimately decent. There is not one late night anchor or MSNBC anchor talking about the mounting investigation and evidence that Ilhan Omar has committed serious immigration fraud and perjury, the same way that outside of Carlson is the only "right-wing" anchor to question the purpose of expanding war in the middle east.
