The aliens were a bad idea. I wanted to defend them for a long time but making them appear front and center at the end was fucking ridiculous. Hawley's reasoning for their presence was completely misguided. Season 2 is otherwise some of the best television I've ever watched.
It's a different story in continuity with the movie.

He wanted some kind of messy (and in my own assumption, impactful, but he did not mention that) element to the story that just happened to occur along the way, in order to lend legitimacy to the "this is a true story" tagline. He cited the scene with Mike Yanigata from the movie as an example of that sort of thing needing to be in Fargo. He concluded that aliens would work best due to the era in which the season took place. I felt like that was an odd take that wasn't necessarily wrong, but the escalation from an awkward date, to an act of god with the tornado fish in season 1, to full on aliens in season 2, and finally angels in season 3, was too much for my tastes.
