This scene was originally scripted to take place in a shopping mall parking lot. An abandoned parking lot, to be precise. There's a lot of abandoned parking lots in Canadian suburbs, they're often out in the edges of fields, forests and things like that. John Fawcett changed the location to the woods after he watched The Blair Witch Project (1999) to make some kind of a reference to it. My opinion is, a good werewolf horror story is supposed to have woods in it, that makes a connection to classic werewolf legends.
