Was this promoted as a musical or was it a surprise?
How the fuck did they get James Hetfield in this? I thought it was just another Parker or Stone impression but it is really him. He's left uncredited too.
George Clooney too. He was huge in the late 90’s. It’s amazing.
I don't think you get how big South Park was during its first few seasons. It's that overnight adult cartoon sensation that was kicked off with The Simpsons and most recently with Rick and Morty.
If it wasn't for George Clooney there might not be a South Park, he sent "Spirit of Christmas" to all his hollywood friends.
It just seemed pretty weird to me because it's done like it's an impression, like a parody of James Hetfield's singing. Also the fact that he was uncredited is a bit weird. But given how popular SP was and how Metallica wasn't in its prime in that period, it was probably a popularity boost for the band.
> If it wasn't for George Clooney there might not be a South Park, he sent "Spirit of Christmas" to all his hollywood friends.
How was George so involved with South Park that early on? Did he know Matt or Trey from something previous?
South Park already did a lot of songs at the time so as I recall it was promoted normally.
>Metallica wasn't in its prime in that period
???????????????
Bros, how the fuck did a show so simply made and so controversial at the time get so popular overnight? How did it get a smash hit R rated movie after just 2 seasons? I literally don't get it? Why didn't the Simpsons make a movie when they were popular?
Normally as in like a non-musical?
They were at their prime musically from 1996 to 2000 for me , but that's a pretty unpopular opinion. General popularity wise I'd say that they were at the top from 1986 to like 1994, with the peak obviously being 1991. South park was just continuing to grow in popularity in 1999.

>Before we even began working on the series, the fact that George Clooney had made hundreds of VHS copies of The Spirit of Christmas and sent them out to all his friends was already the stuff of Hollywood history. When he did the voice of Sparky, Stan’s gay dog [for episode four], he did the voice remotely. We never met him until he finally came by the studio to do a voice for the South Park movie.
Just a big fan.
The Simpsons episode "Kamp Krusty" was at one point going to be the first Simpsons movie if it were up to James Brooks, but the episode was way too short as is a 22 minute cartoon so the staff said no. South Park, The Simpsons, and Rick & Morty just was something everyone was talking about overnight, pretty much lightning in a bottle sensations.
South Park in the late-90s was with professional wrestling on this wave of "offensive television" that was really popular.
In particular, Cartman and Kenny shirts and plushes were EVERYWHERE back then. I was 6 and I was asking to buy a Cartman doll, and begging my dad (mom would always say no) to let me watch South Park with him.
I missed out on like 75% of the jokes due to my age, but the violence and cursing and disgusting situations just reminded me of an extreme version of Ren and Stimpy which me and my dad loved watching together.
it wasn't hetfield, just trey's impression of him (which is on the mark)
Wikipedia says it's Hetfield. I'd believe it was an impression since Trey and Matt are very good at that, but it's just too similar to his actual voice. I think James really put some effort in that song too, because he wasn't really doing that kind of growly voice in 1999 anymore.
You gotta wonder how he took the "smug" episode calling him out. If he's their number one fan, you'd think he would expect that kind of thing, but imagine your waifu going on TV to specifically call you an asshole
If he got what the show was about he'd have a laugh because yes that speech was incredibly pompous.
>WHEN BRIAN BOITANO WAS IN THE OLYMPICS SKATING FOR THE GOLD
>HE DID TWO SALCHOWS AND A TRIPLE LUTZ WHILE WEARING A BLINDFOLD
I can't fucking get this part out of my mind. I specifically love how it resolves on "wearing a blindfold". Plus Kyle's voice is really cute.
>WHEN BRIAN BOITANO WAS IN THE ALPS FIGHTING GRIZZLY BEARS
>HE USED HIS MAGICAL FIRE BREATH AND SAVED THE MAIDENS FAIR
Is my favourite line.
>WHEN BRIAN BOITANO TRAVELED THROUGH TIME IN THE YEAR 3010
>HE FOUGHT THE EVIL ROBOT KING AND SAVED THE HUMAN RACE AGAIN
WHY IS IT SO UPLIFTING
How did they get Radiohead in this!?
On the commentary they say they didn't promote it as a musical, none of the songs are in the trailers
Well it's kind of different because it isn't a movie and they aren't singing an original song. I think Radiohead was more popular in that year than Metallica was in BLU's year though.
The trailers have no songs and no way imply that it's a musical.
>AND WHEN BRIAN BOITANO BUILT THE PYRAMIDS, HE BEAT UP KUBLAI KHAN
>BECUASE BRIAN BOITANO DOESN'T TAKE SHIT FROM ANYBODY
Always made me chuckle how that didn't rhyme.
The strength of South Park's early seasons (and the movie) is that it feels like a adult kids show. The characters still feel like children, they don't know about sex, they make stupid jokes, there's not to much relationship bullshit. There's cute songs, and there are sincere morals at the end of episodes. But then there's lots of violence, sex, grossout, adult themes, and cussing. It's a perfect balance. Mind you, mid seasons South Park is still great (I'd say even overall better than early seasons), but early SP has an unique feel it it. The late seasons declined in quality a bit though.
For me, it’ll always be early South Park. It’s edgy Charlie Brown, not political commentary all the time. I like when the boys just felt like asshole kids, not little adults.
The bit at the end when all the songs come together is unironically better than the bit from Les Mis they were referencing

Saw it in theaters, total surprise, and people left the theater.
>edgy Charlie Brown
Thanks for this definition, it actually encapsulates pretty well what I was trying to say. It really reminds me of Peanuts in many ways. But who is the Charlie Brown of South Park? Stan or Kyle?
Imagine being filtered by a cartoon
Is it because it unexpectedly was a musical, or because it was too vulgar?
Shut your fucking face uncle fucker!
You're the one that fucked your uncle uncle fucker!
Unexpected musical made the basic fags leave. Same with the "missing reel" in Planet Terror made people leave.
How was the title "Bigger, Longer, and Uncut" translated in your language, Yas Forums? Were the songs translated?
>go to South Park movie
>leave because it's "too vulgar"
What kind of retard doesn't know SP is, was, and always will be vulgar?
It was only two years old at that point, not everyone knew
>Unexpected musical made the basic fags leave. Same with the "missing reel" in Planet Terror made people leave.
Do Americans really?
As a musical
>Were the songs translated?
No, because in Democratic Portugal, we only dub animation for children, and South Park is animation for teens/adults
Same.
t. Democratic People's Republic of Finland
In Italian it's "più grosso, più lungo, e tutto intero" which means Bigger, longer and the whole of it. The songs weren't translated though.
>his country doesn't dub adult movies/shows
>tfw South Park the movie was rated 11+ in my country because it was just a cartoon.
Matt and Trey are at their best when they can do musicals and songs.
Just look at Book of Mormon.
I think it was 12 in Finland which makes sense desu. Only Americans think saying boob should be banned.
Watching this opening night remains the most fun I've ever had at the movies. So much laughter.
>his country doesn't dub adult movies/shows
No, because we have this thing called Civilization
Le Resistance is the best song in the whole movie imo.
KHAZAR MILKERS
That's Brian Boitano. Then there's Mountain town and then La resistance.

>We were Jews who met with Christ but we were
>ALL-AMERICAN
I find your ranking acceptable.
>YOU CAN DO IT, IT'S ALL UP TO YOU MKAY
Book of Mormon is great
It was not advertised as a musical at all
surprise for me, but I dont remember seeing any trailers beforehand.
So what went wrong with the newest wave of seasons?
Musical songs are catchy as fuck, but at some point I swear they start sounding the same. This reminds me of Heathers.
That's because 6 minutes for a musical song is too much. Bigger Longer and uncut's tracks are all under 2:30 minutes and most are under 2 minutes.
It's almost like millions of people enjoy rude uncensored art
Ride the Lightning came out 15 years before Bigger, Longer & Uncut
