Actually just watched this one. Not a big fan of Mike Leigh so far. This one was better than Naked but I still feel that he thinks he is more intellectual than maybe he is?
The whole bit with the family shitting on the social worker and the aunt was pretty kino though. Crabs in the bucket mentality amongst the poor and the like, I very much believe it. But again the meandering and philosophical attempts feel a bit too obvious.

The only "proven" purpose for humanity is simple: reproduce and prosper. Same as any other species. But reducing humanity to those basic needs is an obvious mistake.
We know a country is "going well" if the economy is good and if people are prospering and are happy. Beyond that there's no measurement. You can have two countries, one hedonistic in culture and the other puritanical, if the two countries are both full of happy, rich, healthy people, then you cannot say one is going better than the other. Then it just comes down to personal disagreements about how you think one should live their life, which cannot be proved unless specific behaviors are clearly linked to things that cause harm (in this hypothetical though, they do not).
To accept that life ultimately has no singular meaning or ultimate truth it to accept personal freedom. This is not advocation for lack of morality, mind you, or to imply that there's no reason to live. There are infinite reasons to live, and everyone should have their own.
