It's a retelling of the original series/parallel universe but may be some sort of timeloop related to the first series.

The first two films are an excuse to just do the same iconic fights from the series but with much better production values, with a few twists thrown in. The third film is a completely new direction.
The rebuild movies are part "we couldn't do it like this the first time", part cheap cash grab, part Anno trolling the audience.

Most notably, the Ramiel and Zeruel fights are some of the most iconic from the original series and they get super sexed up in the movies to be genuine spectacles.

The thing you have to understand about anime is it's really really cool.

Most people enjoy anime passively and won't shove it in your face, you're confusing the spergy behaviour found in all hobbies as related to either one of them. People who overshare and have trouble expressing themselves properly attach to hobbies and all sorts of bizarre social trends. Anime is inherently colourful so like Sonic or MLP or Kingdom Hearts or whatever it's like one of those insect lamps for autists, and anything that's absurdly repetitive like speed running has the same effect going on.

NGE is one of my favorite shows and I've only watched 3 other anime series (GitS SAC, Gode Geass, and LOTGH). I enjoy it up there with Sopranos, True Detective, Twin Peaks, etc. Anime, like every medium, has it's share of gold and garbage. Just check out what Fox and NBC play at 8pm and tell me that's any better than seasonal Yas Forumsnime.
