wh0's that?
Surely there are different ways a film can qualify as good
I never did understand why Bicycle thieves is regarded as a good film
Is it some sort of cultural relevance or perhaps it’s the skill it took to make the film ?
Can someone explain
Are there any other directors who had as much soul as Kurosawa?
Myriem Roussel
An allegory of the Civil war, different governing elements represented by the deserters. We have our "antagonist" representative of the nobility, giving little to no regard for the common man, Cutler the ever loyal military, only questioning when the commoners get the short end of the stick and the country turns into shambles, Whitehead being the Puritan movement of the time Egger's Witch also takes place around the same time as this film and their trials and tribulations at becoming a recognized body in the English culture. The ending shot with Friend (signifying the commoners) and Jacob (probably signifying the Levellers movement, a movement equivalent to what Martin Luther was to Catholicism).
That's my take on it, really enjoyed it, beautifully shot, acted and written. Scene related to the picture I added really left an impression.
it's a black and white foreign film about poor people being sad. of course film buffs think it's art
Is The Story of Adele H any good? Or do you have any Isabelle Adjani recommendations?
This was great, shame that the main actor did not star in many films after that.
My friends won't watch anymore films with me thanks to this because "it's probably just another dumb movie about a field".
It's decent
Wouldn't an arrow with a dildo attached destroy her insides?
Or was her vagina made of reinforced steel perhaps??
ohoh yes..
posession (1981)
YOU reading this, I want to shoot you in the crotch the same way.
>Or do you have any Isabelle Adjani recommendations?
Nosferatu the Vampyre
Bicycle Thieves was the forerunner to the entire Italian neorealost movement of film. Movies about the actual struggles of poor people shot in an interesting way were virtually unheard of in Italy at the time. Everything that came after it can be thank that film. It is a simple story with a lot of heart.
He looked way too much like Peter O'Toole to make it big tebehe. But yes, this is absolutely fantastic, Donald Pleasance was fantastic.
Kurosawa is unequaled.
Margot was pretty good.
Tark, Bresson, Angelopoulos, Mizoguchi etc.
John Carpenter between 1976 and 1996
What the FUCK is wrong with Spaniards?
What film?
The Holy Innocents. A documentary on Spanish hygiene.
why does almost every Kurosawa film have some cartoonishly groveling peasant characters. takes me out of it.
and almost every man in a Mizoguchi is a misogynist / rapist
Mirrors real life
That is a common theme in his films.
I wish I had a gf (not Jessica though).
>you know what this death tunnel really needs, Hans?
>but zis is already an extremely effici-

Azarías did nothing wrong
Hang them high
I watched Rashomon recently and it was not that good. Seven Samurai still fucks though.
>I watched Rashomon recently and it was not that good
It was entertaining as hell, sure but in the end what was the resolution? "Even though we are full of sin there is still little bit of humanity left inside of us" is that it? I think to be considered a masterpiece you need have something more other than technical achievements.
Chad Vertov
>flamboyant

Virgin Eisenstein
>cringe hair
>einstein wannabe
>contanstly criticized for his film theories
>escaped to Hollyweird, didn't do anything of note there
>escaped to Mexico, didn't do anything of note there
>didn't even finish his magnum opus trilogy
>flicks got banned for being too shitty
Prove this wrong. Pro tip: you can't
Trust me, if you actually tried to articulate an opinion other than a meme it would be better than whatever you just posted, regardless of how stupid your opinions are
Eisenstein was banned from Hollywood for being a communist.
>watch any new wave film
>just get depressed because i'l'l never have a french new wave gf
what's da point bros
you could've just said einstein was gay
Triggered Eisensteinfag
My sources say he was banned for being a loser
True
>Triggered Eisensteinfag
unlike you I didn't get into movies two months ago. I have no strong feelings about eisenstein and last watched one of his movies years ago for a film course. just trying to save this thread from some cringe.
Wow, you're so special for not caring about Eisenstein.
i care about eisenstein when people have interesting things to say about him, not summaries of his wikipedia page fun facts
maybe watch his mexico film and tell us something interesting about it :)
>watch Eisenstein
"No."
wow she's beautiful
yeah, true, if you actually watched the films you talk about you wouldn't be here posting your redit memes. keep up the good work!
what great resolution or message did you see in seven samurai then? i've always found that one boring and kinda pointless. at least Rashomon is interesting to speculate whose accounts of events is closest to the truth, or ask how do we determine the truth. only thing i didn't like is again, the goofy characters at the temple who bookend the movie.
yeah, i sure noticed after seeing pretty much all of them. god damn they can be depressing. especially Life of Oharu.
Read about his real life, it might clarify his focus on some things.
They are so many things in Seven Samurai that made well it is actually insane. First of all, each character development is superb. Mifune's character in Rashomon developed into its peak in Seven Samurai. Also, every one of them feels genuine and selfless while peasants are spineless and ungrateful pieces of shit who are ready condemn samurais instantly. In the end, the resolution for me was, you do favors not for others but for the goodness within and don't look back. Also there are a lot technical things like battle choreography, set design etc.
my fave Godard movie
Is that King Lear?
why was pasolini so depraved
ok yeah fair enough. i guess i just don't like the peasants being one-dimensional characters, even though it may serve a purpose to the message or w/e.
ok going to do that, got a doco lined up too.
look at him go
watching these on a big screen tomorrow
What does /film/ think of this madman?
IMO he's the last major director to do something truly new with the medium. Dogville, the Idiots, and even Europa all serve as incredible formal experiments and just great movies. I even quite liked the House That Jack Built, although I understand how the obnoxiously reflexive nature of it could turn some people off.
Favorite kino?
For me it's Breaking the Waves
My favorite is Dogville. I agree with your assessment of him and love most of the films I have seen. Europa is one of the best neo-noirs I have seen.
Yes, his films are not for the squeamish or faint of heart.
desu Suspiria is good for its visual experimentalism and it has some incredibly striking moments but if you watch the rest of his work (especially Inferno) it becomes clear that he doesn't really know what he's doing and just says "dude throw neon lights at it it'll look cool".
Haven't seen Mother of Tears though.
Dancer in the Dark fucked me up so bad that I never watched any more of him. Too heavy for me, I guess
This is one of the most depressing interviews I've ever seen
Reminder he will always be /our guy/
Lillian Gish was a dish
Where does one begin with Vincent Gallo?
