Yeah those really were fucking pointless and I have to wonder if they were pushed into the show by some producer getting roles for his friends' kids rather than being part of Chase's and the writers visions
I wouldn't recommend skipping them for first time viewers, but I do it in rewatches. They add a bit to Meadow's character development but the time dedicated to those plots really should have been taken up by something else.

That's how the mafia operates. Otherwise every single one of them that got arrested would testify to keep from serving jail time. If they know they'll be taken care of when they get out, they're more likely to hold to their code of silence and not rat out their compatriots even if it means a couple years more time.

I don't think I posted last thread though I have expressed this sentiment before. I imagine it's common among sopanosseurs. Though giving it more thought I imagine the plotline probably was born from Chase, the fact that he was both Jewish and Black, and that being a double slap in the face to Tony's old-schoolishness, seems very within his style. The execution left a lot to be desired to be sure though. Thinking about the writers' intent for so many Sopranos elements never gets old for me.
One of my number one "fly on the wall" wishes would be for a Sopranos writer room meeting.

She was the only woman other than Livia who knew Johnny boy that was still alive, pretty simple. Other than Unlce June and his Mom this was just about the only character Tony could talk to about his Dad, even though technically Paulie worked for Tony's Dad too, but I can't remember if Paulie ever even talks to Tony about that in the show
