Close cut hair is a symbol of modernity, same with a shaved face.

Not entirely true, Romans generally preferred to have short hair and clean shaven faces, but of course trends like that would change from time to time.
Just like the modern preference, it comes from campaigning in places with lice with commoners who can't groom themselves.
Then why is his beard neatly cut?
Because having long hair is a fantasy at that age for a white man.
Soldiers back in the middle ages cut their hair short

In this particular setting I think it is because elves set the fashion, makes sense they would try to look like them
The normans shaved the back of the head and left the front long like a 80's new wave kid who always had to flick their head to get the hair our of their eyes
when i grew my hair out it shocked me how annoying it was not tied up
in the middle of a war having it fly about your face and getting caught on shit would be extremely annoying
idk how women have long hair ever untied
they did this because it wasn't yet common to wear a padded coif underneath your mail coif or cervellaire
it was a style adopted from danes because the mail would pull on the hair in battle
this style was also adopted by slavs for the same reason
men are meant to have long hair
Got any illustrations of that?
If you can pull it off sure but as soon as you start balding it looks like shit

>Got any illustrations of that?
guys on the right. supposedly it was supposed to be so a maille coif wouldn't tug out the hairs on the back of the head when you looked around, but that may be a bad translation of william of jumieges
I think that's Varg.
Having worn maille, can confirm.
I bet they did.
Seek mental help.
Romans were modern.
It is pretty impossible to wear a mail coif for long and not get it tangled in the hair with out a cloth or leather coif underneath. I used to make them for under mail and motorcycle helmets in the winter and a friend made then padded for under a helm. The padding made from those rows of wool scrap stuffed tubes are still used on Russian tank helmets
Depends on the time and place.
Fashions changed fairly quick.
