Sledgehammer, Gabriel's most popular and prolific song is one long string of innuendos. In the Air Tonight, Collin's greatest (arguably) song has depth and emotion, it builds and climaxes whereas Gabriel's Sledgehammers drones on repetitively. Gabriel himself is merely a singer (yes he can play the guitar but relegated himself to vocals) whereas even in his solo era Phil would employ his talents as a drummer.

Sure but why compare in the air tonight and sledgehammer? Gabriel plays piano/keyboards and does so plenty on his solo albums.

I read an interview they did that thry hated the fact they lost to Phil Collins, but they both admitted he could really fucking play the drums.

They did this joke and a Phil Collins ski mountain, but that was it, I think.

That isn't unique, a number of pop musicians played the keyboards, it is babby's first pop music instrument. Meanwhile there are very few drummer/vocalists.

In the Air tonight isn't really about anything either though. Both songs have ambiguous lyrics, and intend to communicate pretty much completely different things...an odd comparison. In the Air is wonderful but sledgehammer is a better hit.
