Thread for civil discussion of arthouse and classic cinema.
/film/
First for Dreyer = theater
>"I think the modern young people are cunts because they can't appreciate being alone"
Was Andrei right?
Has anyone else seen this one? I couldn't find any torrents (or even legit ways to buy it) so I had to rip it off some russian streaming website. I found english subs but it seems like they passed through google translate or something.
Still, I thought it was real good
it's on youtube (but no subtitles)
It's very good and the best thing Germanika has ever done (she's not a bad director, but she fell off hard after her TV-series Ribbons Of May)
I've seen a bit of it, thought it was shitty and boring fap fuel. I don't understand why people would seek it out, is it because of the edgy name?
>boring
the single worst non-critism the pleb can spout
t. coombrain
is that a IRL Kame House?
I wonder if that's because pretentious shit is typically unwatchably boring.
>pretentious
Usually the term used by people who did not get certain film and can't explain why they did not like it.
Watched El Sur. I thought this was some cunny poster's joke, but no, this is a great film. Thanks for the rec guys.
The Spirit of the Beehive is superior
>pretentious
a close runner up for worst non-critism the pleb can spout
yeah it's really fucking good, I want to watch El sol del membrillo but the one on rutracker has barely any seeds.
What's your opinion on this film?
kino
>A Mnvroluus
who?
Based
Thoughts?
Joan of Arc is about as divorced from theatre as a film can get!
>tfw we aren't getting a sequel to the greatest sports film ever made
This is mostly about his post Vampyr films. That being said Rivette's and Bresson's Joan films are much better than Dreyer's.
Better than the original
What movie is this from? Someone posted it in a thread last night.
Yes.
Svankmajer’s Alice, it looks like
thanks
I've watched the Eternity And a Day and The Travelling Players. What Theodoros Angelopoulos film should I watch next?
is he based or overrated?
He's both overrated and underrated. But most of all he's based
Is Millennium Actress good? I just downloaded it but I dont want to waste my time watching anime. Should I?
‘ate Sono
‘ate Koreeda
‘ate Miike
luv Mizoguchi
luv Kurosawa
luv Oshima
Simple as.
what about Ozu?
I love Bresson's but this is simply not true.
Is there a more kino death than own your very own birthday?
Landscape in the Mist. Did you like The Travelling Players and Eternity and a Day?
It is. Bresson dabs on Dreyer.
Imagine disregarding an entire medium and calling yourself an appreciator of art
>he watches anime
Kys weeb
Seethe more pretentious faggot, you're the reason no one takes arthouse fans seriously
>most anime is bad, therefore anyone who watches any anime has shit taste
Tell me why should I watch it? Are there enough Ozu and Setsuko Hara reference to make it worth?
>an entire medium
Being made in a specific country doesn't make it a separate medium from animation kek
>you're the reason no one takes arthouse fans seriously
Lmao, arthouse is not a genre and the definition is quite vague. The term you are looking for is probably a cinephile.
You can fuck off with your creepy, melodramatic, retarded weeb shit. Fucking faggot.
Correct
Zack Snyder should be as respected as many of the directors mentioned in this thread.
>Zack Snyder should be as respected as many of the directors mentioned in this thread.
okay, I'll bite. exactly why should he be?
Not watching animation because it's from a particular country is just as retarded.
Ignore the retards in this thread. If you want to see editing used creatively, pushing the boundaries of how it can be utilised then watch millennium actress or any satoshi kon film for that matter.
Chiaki Konaka should be as respected as many of the directors mentioned in this thread.
just saw My Winnipeg yesterday and loved it
I have seen some animations suggested by different people here, but Millennium Actress is more /film/ related because of the references made. I just want to know what others think about it.
He is greatest visual storyteller living today with every frame seeped in symbolism that people are still figuring out today. If you're a brainlet you wouldn't get it.
Personally man there are probably more references but Kon is a very different filmmaker from ozu. If you're a fan and looking for something similar you won't get it.
You watch kon for his style of visual storytelling and his famous creative editing.
yeah, this is exactly the type of response I figured I'd get. all hyperbolic posturing and no substance. care to try again? please explain why Zack Snyder "is greatest visual storyteller living today."
Anyone ever watch Affliction? I've made a couple threads that have gotten zero replies and never see it discussed. A lot of people see it as anti-men which is maybe a simplistic view, but it's an excellent film
Also want to add one more. The main characters movie career is supposed to somewhat parallel setsuko hara(and it's more about her career than Ozu himself). A more detailed read can be found here.
The first 2/3 of the movie are really weak but damm the ending hits you hard.
It's my favorite Kon movie so yes, it's a 10/10 in my watch.
Does he have any symbolism that isn't "it looks like this famous christian painting"?
He also died 2 years after his mom, whit whom he lived for 60 years in the same house.
>that black athlete training and eating alone
poor lad
That’s incredibly based
El Sur was supposed to be a mini-series, but it got canned right away so it was completed only the 2/3 of it. That's why the ending is so eeire. It's an incompleted story.
I have watched some animations suggested in this thread, one of them was Perfect Blue and I will only say that at least I didnt feel it was a waste of time like other animations I have seen before. I'm mostly interested in this film because of Setsuko Hara.
I will watch it then.
Comes down to personal preference
rarefilmm.com
Here we have a couple of brainlets upset they couldn't notice 1/10th of the symbolism in his films.
>He directed a japanese version of The Shadow Over Innsmouth
>youtube.com
oh fuck never knew that, and he loves Babymetal group to even name his blog like they.
>tripleaxel.cocolog-nifty.com
I'm a big pleb and want to take the opportunity that being quarantined has given me to broaden my horizons in regards to movies, please recommend me something to watch, I'm open to anything
Man Bites Dog
so symbolism is your reason? really?
