I have noticed, though, HUGE over-representation of interracial couples in television advertising lately. Not even in media, in general. Just, specifically, television advertising. Why is that? Are advertisers going out of their way to include interracial couples in their ads?
Besides more conspiratorial, social justice-y reasons, the only thing I can think of is because talent for commercials generally don't need to have super deep narrative depth, and therefore aren't really "characters," and can be played by literally almost anyone. So race isn't really taken into consideration during casting at all.
Any ideas? Again, purely as a point of interest and curiosity. Can't just be a coincidence, can it?
To the actual anons and not reddit tourists, how have you managed to obtain a presumably "normal" girlfriend? the non-schizo answer is that, the the vast majority of people, it appeals the most. Not because the vast majority like interracial relationships, but because most people aren't actually racist, and by making your couple mixed race, the ad firm can appeal to twice the demographic. That's why the most common interracial pairing on TV is actually white/Mexican, because those are the two largest demographic groups in America and the most money can be made by appealing to both at the same time. It really has nothing to do with agendas (mostly, I'm sure there are some woke companies out there that actually believe they're making the world a better place by showing hapa couples or something), most of it just comes down to money. This shouldn't be surprising, most of corporate America pretends to have a positive agenda but really just cares about moolah. BP runs commercials saying they love the environment and workers, but everyone knows that's horseshit and they really just want money. My girlfriend is legitimately probably more racially prejudiced than I am. I make jokes constantly about race, sex, sexual orientation, whatever. However, her opinions (which she's espoused to me) and her public reactions (reserved though they may be) have indicated that she would actually rather not have anything to do with people who are a few margin points removed from herself, which I guess I shouldn't be too surprised about. I mean as a woman you have to value safety and security above all else, right?
