The thing is though, is that no one actually really does it. It's like the default "hobby" for people that have no real interests and attributes. You start talking to them about it and their eyes just sort of glaze over.

I build dioramas and models. I'm not at home right now but I usually take smaller scale naval models and fixate them in colored epoxy and make waves, bubbles, projectiles, etc. I usually then use LEDs to add color/light/etc. It's neat and takes a week or two to make, but I usually make/sell them from commissions but the ones I keep usually get compliments when I have guests over. My wife does most of the painting on the models (because I hate painting). My most recent project is a STuG IV that I'm planning to put into an ambush scene. I've been sitting on this one for a few months now because of a Bismarck commission that's for over 1.5k for a small naval history museum. As far as work goes I work in the medical field for a fairly large University.

This one was really rough and I did it in an afternoon piss drunk. Most of mine come out museum quality but I pretty much tried to speedrun this one to see how fast I could do it. Took my about 2-3 hours to full assemble.

Buy some of the metal miniatures on Ebay. They're dirt cheap and you can paint and strip them as many times as you like.

Also don't buy Citadel paints. Buy Vallejo.

Its not a bad idea, the game can be a chore to play and i get more enjoyment from the painting and converting than playing. The use of command points instead of intrinsic abilities, the higher points size armies and the unbalanced force org charts is a slog and about an hour into a game i just want to do something else. Just buy and paint/convert the models you like one at a time. Do NOT buy anything until you finish what you already have. I know someone with like 5k points worth of marines that have been sitting brand new in boxes for the past 10 years.

Must be nice to create. Keep at it.

the actual game is easily the worst part of warhammer
as the other user said, buy shit off ebay and use army painter, vallejo, anything that isn't citadel. If you have an interest in other miniature wargames or miniatures in general that aren't warhammer, go for those if you can stomach it because if you get into warhammer you will end up spending more than if you get into, say, gunpla
