i really didn't like TLJ, but i'll say this, the 2nd movie was such a radical departure from the first (for better or for worse, it doesn't matter), that it would've been better if he had directed the entire trilogy from the get-go, at least there'd be consistency

Sage this shit. JJ is shit, Rian is shit. Not only did the fucking movie show he doesn't understand the OT characters and their motivations, but he didn't understand JJ's characters either. The EU even handled Luke's shortcomings better- he had students fall to the dark side and he didn't go run off to die on some island, he continued to mentor other students and then confront former students if they threatened war (and he didn't always succeed in the confrontations either.)

i can understand that stand point and it makes a lot of sense but, based on the shit he wrote for luke, i don't think you can trust someone like him with a franchise like star wars over 3 movies. maybe if it was up to him, he wouldn't have been forced to shoe-horn in all the old characters and deal with random ass shit jj set up like snoke and whatever and it would have been a clean slate

with all that being said, i don't think there is enough juice left in the tank of the original 3 movies to even make a sequel trilogy that isn't egregious on some fronts. it seems like a poisoned chalice and the only way to break free from the star wars curse would be to radically depart from the whole skywalker storyline entirely and delve into something completely new. the problem with that is it wouldn't fly with disney's council of who want guaranteed money

It's a 2:30 hour film about a slow space car chase that's solved by an internal consistency breaking plot hole, about two characters fucking around in some space casino for no reason and about a girl forcing an old man who happens to be a potential child murderer to teach her things she already knows so she can fight something that no one's clear what it is. There's no conflict drving this movie, Kylo kills the bad guy and then he becomes the bad guy somehow a few scenes after he proposes Rey to quit all that nonsensical abortion of a trilogy. There are no themes or message in this movie, sacrifice is sometimes heroic (Holdo), sometimes not (Rose). We have to let go of the past sometimes, sometimes we don't. And so on. This movie looks like a fever dream more than a movie, like things happening for no reason in an environment that somehow resembles a Star Wars movie.

I actually think there was another TLJ planned, one with Rey falling to the dark side and Holdo being a traitor, that Disney scrapped and that's why the TLJ we saw was such an embarrassing franchise killing Frankenstein. Or maybe Rian was based and did it on purpose. Or maybe he's a hack

the whole casino storyline is stupid and annoying because it hinges solely on the fact po felt he was forced to something because he thought holdo wasn't doing anything because holdo refused to disseminate any information because she didn't like him personally. it feels like the casino bit, the random benicio del toro appearance and then the random sequences after being captured could be cut out in their entirety because everyone would end in same place regardless, holdo's plan by itself is retarded because she wants to evacuate everyone into pods and hide on the nearest planet with a giant unused rebel base. why wouldn't the empire just search that planet immediately...

the problem i have with tlj is that any tension or investment you feel in the movie is immediately evaporated if you try to think about what is happening.

I actually don't mind the casino parts so much, the worst part about it is that it makes a movie that has nothing to say 40 minutes longer. It says a lot that when I think about ways of improving TLJ everything I come up with is taking shit out and making the movie shorter and shorter until there's no movie at all.

Kylo was never the villain, he was the misunderstood victim who is on a self-destructive path due to his poor coping mechanisms developed from a lifetime of abuse, neglect, and manipulation by his caretakers. The chaos he leaves in his wake is purely metaphorical because in the SW universe he is a literal demigod and the most powerful Force User to ever exist. It was simply inevitable that he would end up taking over the Galaxy if left on his Dark Path.

the problem with that is that you don't need to dedicate an entirely separate storyline to build a relationship up a between two characters. it would have been more powerful if someone else who we already knew like poe were to stop finn because poe of all people would understand the weight of what finn was trying to do. the theming of rose and only trying to save what you love seems to be anti everything else. many parts of the ot were people putting themselves on the line and dying for a greater good. i don't like the selfishness of rose because it comes across and you should only protect things you immediately care about and are invested in

that isn't very fair to snoke because he had practically zero screen time. you can't immediately write off a character as 2d and a rip off when the character hasn't been given any room to breathe.

kylo is a far more interesting character but he did not have enough about him to be the standalone villain which is probably why jj felt pressured to just bring back palpatine anyway. kylo's motives for villainy seem to stem from an annoyance at luke and a lust for power. kylo works as a character because of his internal strife and he would be a shit character if ultimately, he just gave into being evil
