I think the problem was that it had been twenty years since the original show's run so the writing wasn't as sharp as when they were much younger.

They did an interview with them about that sketch and I think the director felt really bad about the fact that a couple of times he'd just go "OKAY EVERYONE!! MONKS GO OVER THERE AND ALL THE FAT KIDS GO OVER THERE!" and made the kids feel bad about themselves.
Just adds to the comedy for me.
