I think you're joking, but still, the film has not a single spoken word in it.
I never watched a film by Tsai Ming-liang, which one should I start with?
*doesn't have
the first one, Rebels of the Neon God
>yfw you realize that Czechoslovak New Wave absolutely steamrolled French New Wave in terms of innovation, creativity and quality of their output yet FNW is praised more
Closely Watched Trains is a masterpiece
The French are sexier.
They're sexier but not as enjoyable.
Has anyone seen Jaromil Jireš's The Joke? Is it any good and what is the style/tone of it? The Milan Kundera novel its based on is one of my favourites. How does The Joke (1969) compare to The Unberable Lightness of Being (1988) movie with Daniel Day Lewis?
Debatable. Which is your favourite in FNW and CNW?
It's quite funny and Kundera worked on the script. Iirc the film reduces some book sequences. It's worth watching for sure.
Goddamn when will he stop looking out of the fucking window?
I know he's become a bit of a meme because of le kkk movie and that one schizo, but it's crazy how well Griffith was able to use film to capture the essence of humanity. Intolerance is over a hundred years old and it still feels relevant today
Just finished Edward Yang's A Brighter Summer Day and holy shit, was it good. Almost a perfect movie, only thing that threw me off was the MC's autism towards the end. It appeared that he realised his ex-girlfriend was a dirty, opportunistic whore when he got locked up by that Jade girl, but instead he decided to fuck up his friendship and future. I mean, it was building up to it, with his apparent anger issues, as well as him not being sure where he belongs, but I guess to a westerner it just seems too inadequate. I wish I had a friend as cool as the little Elvis dude, Cat. Very redpilling film to be fair. Bros before hoes and filial piety are the truest virtues in life.
since it's Tsai Ming-liang probably after like 20 minutes
fpbp
based, now what is your favourite film from Lav Diaz
Thanks, I'll put it on the list.
Thoughts?
From What Is Before
Check out Joseph Kilian too, similar theme
it's insane how criterion restored this film
youtube.com
Is this his best work?
funny because it says the film is intentionally unsubtitled five seconds in. as a subtitle. just thought that was a bit clever.
>Principal photography took place in Bangkok, Thailand since 2014. After filming for four years, this film sarted to undergo a long-term post-production in Taiwan.
Jeez, four years of principal photography? Is there an in-story or some other reason for this?
probably Ming-liang being lazy
Wasn't this around the time that Tsai said he is retired? Yet he spends 4 yours filming and than editing for another 2? Is he getting senile?
he probably meant retirement from somewhat conventional cinema, Stray Dogs was the shift from his previous body of work to things like Journey to The West and now Rizi.
I like this film. I also particularly like the different choices it made from the short story.
Very pretty and vast. Political critique is a little cliche but it's done poetically.
you ever notice how the vast majority of movies are shit?
Have you watched Yi Yi?
bump
This was the worst Tsai film i have seen.
unexpected and nice
>t. doesn't understand how restoration works
how does it work?
filtered hard
Why? Explain what's good about it you faggot lover.
The original negative was in great condition, it was just a normal restoration. The restoration of the Apu trilogy is much more impressive.
it's not even his first film with fags
Tsai has started this video art extreme version of "slow cinema" back in 2013 with Stray Dogs, and all his previous films were leading up to stuff like this. He rehearsed the idea with short films like "Walker" and his medium-length "Journey to The West", I was interested in these experiment. Rizi is what it's all been leading up to, a pure meditative observation of time and a relationship.
Still, you can't say that the restored version of A Brighter Summer Day doesn't look way better.
>Yas Forums says its kino
>its just another "sad man meandering" movie
name one kino comedy,i fucking dare you
I didn't say that.
>Three of his movies, namely The Village, Lady in the Water and Split, have been chosen in the Annual Top 10 Lists of Cahiers du Cinéma.
Based
Chaplin, Keaton, Tati, Jackie Chan.
20 minutes of fag massage is too much even for me. Stray Dogs had an atmosphere and visual beauty that this film lacks. This looks mediocre, some shots are good, mostly exteriors but the digital is sketchy. One faggot cooking meal for 10 minutes is not riveting or hypnotic. Some of the shot composition and camera placements are nonsensical too.

well I understand why you might hate the fag part, but I don't see how this film looks any worse than Stray Dogs
The shaky camera when the film is shot outside was distracting too. Everything shot inside was terribly bland. In Stray Dogs too, but the crumbling of the wall or whatever added to the atmosphere and thematic weight of the film. Here it's just bland.
there are some dull shots but I never found them to be prelevant
I thought the movie was sweet and it gave me an interesting feeling. It's the early spring weather of it (I think it's early spring?) when it's not too warm yet, but not too cold already, a perfect balance. This fit into the meditative nature of the film nicely.
I would say it's 50/50 with the dull and good. I liked the shot of the building or whstever it was with broken windows.
I thought it lacked any sort of atmosphere except for few scenes. I don't think it's bad but probably his most pointless feature length effort.
i like when directors make something personal and totally uncompromising like this, like they just want to shoot nice landscapes, experiment a little, make something extremely simple.
When directors do this it emphasises that they make films not because they try to make people like them, or want to get awards but because they just like making films, shooting things on camera. It just feels pure and honest and further elevates their other works.
Sure that's admirable, i wish he shot landscapes or city more instead of that massage scene though.
My favorite movie :)
I want a serious conversation on why the guy making these threads always has to link his old thread in the title. Is it some ego thing?
same :)
No, planning on watching it soon though. I heard that A Brighter Summer Day is much different than any of his other ones.
It's how generals work, newfag.
For archival purposes. It makes it easier to trace an old thread if you want to check for something.
Jireš' other films beside Valerie are surprisingly hard to come by. I don't remember being particularly impressed by The Joke but it was decent.
>ruin a film's great visual by making it look like it was shot on digital circa 2005
I also haven't watched it yet, I doubt that is going to be better than A Brighter summer day but people still say it's an amazing film.
