It's a unofficial tax; if you want live broadcasts on a telly you pay £150ish a year, or claim that you don't watch it and get threatening letters/risk of a fine for the rest of your life. My pa got fined and nearly jailed for not paying because he was in hospital when the court date came up and they tried his in absentia, so it escalated. Something like 17 people a year spend a few weeks in prison for none payment.

The idea is to decriminalise none payment, so they can still fine you, and try to collect, but they won't have police backing and you won't go to jail for not paying. So most people would stop and just laugh at them. Then when their meeting with the government comes up to be re-affirmed they are likely be told to kindly fuck off and become a subscription service. I think that's the gist of it as someone who has never had to pay for it personally and hasn't read too deeply.

The idea was that they would be 'publicly' owned and funded but not answerable to the government, allowing a wide selection of services and entertainment (news, tv shows, documentaries, tv movies, radio, ect) without bias and in the public interest and no corporate interests or advertising. It's not a bad idea in theory. Sadly, we live in an imperfect world, so they have become a haven for leftist agendas that are funded no matter what they do, and they made the mistake of trying to fuck over the Tories and Brexit, so now they find themselves in the firing line against a Tory majority government and a prime minister they mocked relentlessly.

My pa told them he didn't watch telly, which is true, but he missed a letter saying they didn't believe him and never received the letter telling him it had gone to court. So he received a hefty fine of £450 (up to a maximum of £2000 if they get the right barrister or whatever). He put off paying it, because frankly he couldn't afford it, and they escalated it, and it became a court ordered fine/sum. He had no choice but to pay this or risk prison for none payment... and got the fucking flue/pneumonia about a week before the deadline. He had to call and pay it while on oxygen in his hospital bed or else when he got out of hospital he would likely have been going to court to see whether he was off to prison or getting an even bigger fine.

They get fucking nasty and you aren't safe by ignoring their letters. Sure, they can't fuck everyone, but if you are unlucky it's shit.

It's best not to conflate BBC News and the assorted shows produced by the BBC. BBC News will always act in favour of whatever the current government, lest they face the risk of getting defunded. For example, stories that are negative about the Opposition will often be very widely distributed, while those critical of the Government are just quietly swept under the carpet.
It's probably worth remembering that the current Government is right-wing. Not American right-wing, proper right-wing.

The bad things about this season are that the writing was garbage, there were too many companions (none of them were very good but Yaz specifically could have been cut easily to allow the other two more space), and Jodie was pretty mediocre. Improve any of these things and the season would have been better but without improving multiple of these aspects it'll still be bad.

Capaldi had a lot of bad episodes too but they would have been much worse without him. In those episodes, you'd only have to improve one thing (the writing). The current season just has no real redeeming factors.

They can assume you are lying and take it to court. It's just that they can only do that to probably 5% of people, and 95% of those will cave and just buy a license. 2% of them won't and will be fined, and 0.01% will for whatever reason fail to pay said fine and (around 17ish people) end up jailed for a few weeks and fined more harshly.

You can probably challenge it in court and get off with no fine, as long as they bother to send you a letter telling you it's going to court. They often get 'lost'.

The burden of proof is theirs. They have to provide evidence of guilt. As there is no evidence to find they can't do shit.

If the court 'loses' the letter then they are free to present whatever they want, and your lack of presence/defence means they win by default. It happened to a family member user. I lived in the same flat at the time.
