Remember the days of Blockbuster? Movies would come out every Tuesday and Friday. That tradition continues today because those are the best days to release new films to home video according to marketing research. So, every Tuesday and Friday, starting at 9PM PST (aka 12 EST), all the big VOD companies like iTunes, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, Google, etc do their movie releases and we just wait from 9PM PST onwards for the releases to be ripped and uploaded by various groups online.

I know. I unironically watched the last James Bond this way. Just curious about this fashion of meme color grading. It has gotten increasingly worse over the last decade. Even worse than it comes when we finally have working HDR releases that are grand provided there isn't trash filters all around.

It’s a trend started by using digital. When you shoot on a digital camera, the colour out of camera is completely flat with basically no contrast or saturation, with the idea being that the log file retains as much information about the range of tones and colours as possible so it can be manipulated at length in post. However, in the early days of digital people didn’t know what they were doing or possibly began experimenting with the flatter colour profile and so now we have a minor trend of flat, grey colour grading that won’t seem to fucking die
