I've heard both are great, but despite it being more obscure than the average anime people watch, the people who try to tell me which version to watch never seem to have any idea why the one they saw is better.

It depends on the studio, but the old one is really old. I'm sure its a masterpiece for its time but the modern one probably has less filler and more animation in its action scenes. I'd just check the episode guides to see how long it takes each version to get through any given arc.

The exame arch is great. I've noticed Japanese anime has a lot of exame archs and they tend to be the best part. Naruto chunin exam for example.

Watch episode 1 of the 1999 version. Then watch 2011 from episode 1 onwards. Once you finish the first arc, you should check out episode 30 from the 1999 anime for some cool tonal differences.

Not sure what this is doing on Yas Forums but I happen to be an expert on HxH so you've come to the right place. No, there is no point to watching the original first, because it adapts less of the story and adds a lot of filler that just isn't very good. HxH 2011 is pretty much a perfect adaptation of the manga with zero filler. The only reason to watch HxH 1999 is if you're done with all the other HxH stuff and craving a way to experience more of it, which you probably will. So save it for later to see what it did different, but for your first experience of the series, watch 2011 first.

Absolutely worth your time if that older visual style is something you look for in a show, watched 2011 first but rewatched by starting with 1999 and continuing with 2011 from greed island onwards and it was 100% worth it

I'm a sucker for the retro look so I really like this collage. Why do older anime tend to have this sort of look, particularly the shading, but you don't see it in newer anime? I'm sure part of the answer is cels vs digital but there has to be more to it

I finished 2011 some months ago and I can't say I crave a single drop of it more, yet another anime Yas Forums tricked me into watching that was horseshit for the most part with glimmers of good writing here and there that weren't worth it

first 100 episodes are alright
final 50 episodes are boring as shit except for the fight between the hunter chief and the ant king
anyone who thinks the "character progression" of the ants is remotely interesting is a low IQ retard. it's bland, generic, on the nose, I'd even say it's basically 50 filler episodes. MC doesn't fight just sits there and when he transforms he just one shots the fleeing enemy.

absolutely hate the ants. it's difficult to relate to inhuman characters like them. it was all worth it for that chief/king fight as well as the gon transformation part. The election arc was an absolute breath of fresh air.

No, the 1999 one was directed by someone experienced, the guy behind Samurai X/Kenshin show, while the 2011 one was directed by a retard. With the 1999 one you only deal with some minor censorship and filler (that's actually good). 2011 does some batshit stupid stuff in terms of creative changes with certain characters like Kite.

Chimera Ant is actually worth watching, but you're stuck needing to watch the rest of the fucking terrible series to know what's going on. Also, that arc leaves out the only good recurring character, Clown Fag.
