The film was faithful to the core elements of Sonic. Other than that, Sonic barely has any canon. Characters carry over sometimes, but previous events are almost never mentioned, and when they do, it's usually in passing. Like past villains showing up for like two minutes in Sonic Forces.

This was wayyy worse than Pikachu. There's like only 2 scenes that showcase his speed, and they're clearly ripoffs of Quicksilver and Flash. Everything else is a paint by numbers fish out of water CGI blob meets straight man movie.

I'm a diehard Silent Hill fan, but that movie was bad. It did a good job capturing the atmosphere and visuals of the games, but the script was terrible and it wasn't scary in the slightest. Also, Pyramid Head appears for no reason other than fanservice.

The smart alecky tone did grate sometimes. Always hate when kids movies start with that sort of cheeky narration.

Sonic 1 - Sonic 06 all had a connected story, and while less strongly connected, Unleashed to Generations kept to the same canon as those games. It was Sonic Lost World that had no real connection, then Forces which fucked it all up.

Sonic 1 is the origin
Sonic 2 has Robotnik build the Death Egg
Sonic CD has Metal Sonic.
Sonic 3 has Angel Island fall, the Master Emerald, and the Death Egg again
Sonic Adventure directly references plot points, items, and locations from 3.
Sonic Adventure 2 is a continuation of 1.
Sonic Heroes continues Shadow's story and brings back Metal Sonic
Shadow the Hedgehog continues Shadow's story.
Sonic 06 also continues Shadow's story and continues relationships built in SA2 - Shadow
Sonic Unleashed is way less related, but doesn't contradict anything.
Sonic Colours is Eggman apologising for Sonic Unleashed
Sonic Generations is obvious.

Lost World is the one with the drastically different world, random hexagon planet, and shit writing. Mania works fine, but Forces contradicts everything.

2, 3&K, Adventure games, Heroes and Shadow are definitely part of an overarching plot. You could also add the Advance games and Sonic Battle, which also belong in the same continuity.
