It came out a few weeks before dark crystal. They recently terminated the actors' contracts but they didn't actually cancel it.
This show doesn't have any actors but it's probably in the same boat.

From what I heard, it's not actually canceled. The director and (I think) one of the actors have other things they're working on, so it's kind of in limbo until they're free.

Reason for that is the director, David Fincher, is working on a new film since Nov 2019, 3 months later so it's on hold now, and Netflix decided to release the contracts on Jan this year.
If anything, it show that Netflix isn't shy to announce things like this, so what happening with AoR is quite odd
