A good director / DP / and writer work well on the first season with minimal executive meddling.
For season 2 I'm sure some of the key talent changed, but also crucially the writer had already told his nihilist / edgy athiest tale. There's only so many ways you can write the misery-plot with lovecraftian overtones before it isn't interesting anymore (read: one season).
So yeah if all you know and believe in is shitty nihilism, don't be surprised you burn out creatively after the first season.

The story of what looks like an epic conspiracy unravelling into a much more basic one is interesting, so is the hero being so old and sick that he doesn't even realise he has uncovered the truth.
