watched both the other night and both were shit. sonic was so unremarkably boring. seriously of all the things they could have done. would have preferred a whole movie set in his home world. fuck lame human characters they try get us to care about. pokemon had a kinda cool fantasy world but still the movie was gay. I would not recommend either of these movies.

Nah, it was never going to bomb. Pokemon is still the biggest media franchise in the world (even though it sucks now). It did come too late to capitalize on the popularity of Pokemon Go, however.

It didn't. Neither were great movies by any stretch but Detective Pikachu was better.

I still stand that the bad Sonic CGI was a publicity stunt. Not only it gave the movie lots of attention, it also brought a ton of good will when they "fixed" it. Sonic also luckily came out during the drought where the only alternative in cinemas was MAN BAD Harley Quinn flick.

I think some movies just succeed and fail for no apparent reason. There are some well-cultivated franchises like MCU with it's own army of lemmings guaranteeing success, but then you have movies like John Wick that feature hasbeens actors on a tiny budget and they shoot up, and then you have movies like Solo which flop against all odds. PR money can only take you so far. Normies do not think hard about movies, they see a flashy banner or stumble upon the trailer, or hear something on twitter, their herd mentality kicks in and they go see it. It's just that the stars aligned for Sonic better than they did for Pokemon
