LONG LIVE THE KING
>has access to an infinite variety of soundclips on his soundboard
>plays the same three Homer Simpson quotes every fucking time
THE DESTROYER
>mfw Opie plays the same soundboard clip 20 times in a row
>says joke that gets no response
>waits 15 minutes and interrupts the flow to take a phone call
>LETS GO TO SNOWAYYY FROM MICHIGAN
>hey ope i thought your joke from earlier didn't get enough credit, it was hilarious
I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
>I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
>I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
>I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
>I GOT A TREE ON MY HOUSE
>jimmy awkwardly having to go "oh what'd you say? oh wow that's funny"
that entire situation just blew when it happened.
Wasn't Ant responsible for a lot of the soundboard horseshit?
i remember a time he did that when people actually gave his joke an appropriate laugh
he was so jealous of talented and funny people
basically, if a soundboard clip fit the moment and was funny, it was ant
if it sounded like a retard mashing buttons, it was opie
What this guy said:
Ant was actually pretty great with sound effects. Opie, however, would play the same clips over and over. His input was often completely disconnected with what was actually going on around him. Truly autistic.
Opie's autism also led to a lot of really funny radio in my opinion, his only comedic skill was how mean he was willing to be to other people but he did it effectively sometimes. Opie's autism and general unfunniness sucked but so did Ant's boring race/obama rants and Jim's awful porn whore interviews.
Didn't someone say "we all heard it, we laughed" or something? I vaguely recall that too.
It thought I remembered some spam of the car crash or good lord or the laugh or something a couple of times and it being Ant, but I might be mistaken. I know Opie does it too and I'm all for hating on the guy but I thought Ant had a few shitty times with it too. Though it doesn't take much to make me annoyed at a soundboard. Playing it over audio they're trying to listen to, spamming something or just using an annoying one gets the same "stop this shit" reaction from me.
Soundboard Fez is fine though.
I can agree that Ant and Jim were horrible in their own ways, but at least they were comedically redeemable. Opie was unbearable.
>someone makes a joke about you/where you're from
>HEY!
This fucking pissed me off and to think they had the audacity to jocktober other shows
>Patrice, Vos, and Cumia having comfy and funny conversation
>Opie stops it to take a phone call from a truck driver with a shitty cellphone
I miss 07/08 Fez before he came out to Ron thinking it would fix him and instead just made him a bitter cunt.
would people like opie more if o&a had more dry talk radio stuff and not comedy?
is opie shit at radio and talk shows in general? or do you just hate him because he tried to be funny and wasn't?
the distinction is interesting to think about.
i like him when there's just a normal conversation without many jokes flying around.
sort of what often happened when it was just the two of them.
i remember them talking about ghosts, ope's kid waking him up etc. just in general a relaxed conversation. jim wasn't there to chim in with uncle paul or whatever. wasn't much of an expectation or focus for quick lines being peppered in.
i liked him during shit like that.
Where to start with Ron and fez? What am I in for?
>"HOLY SHIT ITS SNOOKY!"
>*crickets chirping*
>"What?"
This is the reason i can go back and listen to Ron & Fez but i cant listen to O&A. Every fucking clip has Opie ruining the flow of the comedy by opening his mouth
People hate opie for halting bits when the comics are riffing to take stupid phone calls or change the topic entirely and for making everyone walk on greggshells. No one hates him for being dull.
Million dollar contracts and such a dicksucking fanbase really did make them value themselves way too highly.
The high points of the show were really fucking high. But they weren't the norm for it.
To think Sam, of all people, is basically the last person carrying their torch and relevance is hilariously apt.
Nice legacy.
based opie poster
Start on satellite, end when esd leaves
The only solace I myself can get from listening to old shows is the frothing seethe opie goes into for two straight minutes whenever Howard stern is mentioned. Who's the hack now opie you jobless and friendless fuck
Find the Best Of playlist on youtube.
if you like what you hear on that stuff, just start listening to full episodes you can find and just go through randomly or whatever.
You'll notice Fez being very different in different clips. If you hate how neurotic and quiet he is in a lot of them, you'll know to skip the stuff closer to the end of their show and stick with the earlier episodes. If you don't mind it, basically everything is fine and laid back.
But he was a liar who had to make up obviously fake stories just so he'd have something to say. His shitty westwood one show is him having conversations and its terrible.
I think Opie had his moments and yeah you're right he was better when he just chilled out and talked but that wasnt why people liked the show it was for the comedy and he couldnt live up to that
It was always great listening to Opie talking about radio as if it was some lost art when clearly nobody else gave a fuck.
Even when he was interviewing people he had nothing profound to offer. He was simply too dumb to be an entertainer. Period.
The cookie incident with the cat is the most painful radio that's ever been recorded.
>it's another "i took my lunch to school in concrete bag" story
i loved watching him make up stories to try to relate to people who actually grew up poor
this fuck was caddying and going to ski resorts in a rich area of new york, so full of shit
Personally i started listening to short clips from random uploaders from all over the timeline. 06 to 2014. Then i just started listening to full episodes from 08. I just picked a random point but i shoulda started way earlier, Earl & Lilly are already gone and Fez is already on his downslide and you can tell Ron is already sick of him. Im thinking of going back a couple of years but dont know when.
But yeah just start with short clips and see what you think before investing more into it. Its a very different show to O&A but thats what makes it still enjoyable now whereas Opie ruins old O&A clips even if Patrice is on
I'm convinced the people who say they love that episode is because it's the most you'll ever hear Fezzie talk on a single show in that "era"
I just don't get the whole "I love cringe radio/videos" thing at all. I can't stand it.
so you're saying... be more funny?
He worked for the mob. Legit though.
So many Patrice Oneal episodes turn into "bitching about Stern" tirades. These are episodes that would be split up by weeks and Stern is brought up on almost every single one. I couldnt imagine how tiring that shit would have been listening to it daily.
I miss Dennio.
Opie keeping Bobo around for his "radio gold" was his most hateable thing he did.
Back in like '00 when they were on WNEW and there was no Dave faggotry and Fez was fun gay.
ironic considering Patrice got his start on Stern and didn't have any ill will toward him whatsoever, but still had to sit there listening to opie shit talk the guy
It was extra COPE when you factor in Stern never even acknowledged these guys existed.
This. But even towards the end as anoying as fez got i laugh my ass off at some of those clips. Like when Ron & Pepper are roleplaying with Fez acting out a gay date with him and just shitting on him the whole time. Its so mean but hilarious.
I actually find some of the earlier clips to be the hardest to listen to. When Fez gets drunk and starts screaming at an intern and Ron backs him up like a fucking idiot when Fez getting smacked by an intern might have knocked some sense into him.
Shit theres one clip "ron yells at management" or something where Ron gets pissy at a program director because he was asking why is Fez being so quiet. This was before they even made the move to satellite.
>HEYY FFFRRRRENCHIE
well, the partner in the conversation obviously matters. i don't view his westwood one show as him doing more of what i did like of him on the o&a show.
that made up shit was really irritating though i agree. whether it was the attempts at comedy, or attempts at looking cool, anything that "wasn't him" just came across douchy and was awful.
i don't know though. i personally saw o&a partly as a regular talk show too, not just comedy. a lot of it was just recapping and commenting on news. the show always felt very different when the two of them were alone, sometimes when it was the 3 of them too. but any time they had a guest in it definitely became a comedy show and you expected to laugh every minute.
i understand some people wanting much more of that. but i've noticed i appreciate the quiet, laid back segments with minimal or no jokes at all a lot more on recent listens. the show can be pretty great without comedy. but it does depend on the topic or who is there.
I loved when he tried playing poor saying he had powdered milk in front of Patrice who's mom was so poor he didn't even have that. What fucking idiot tries to act like he had a hard time because the car he used to drive to school wasnt brand new?
GUESS I GOT WHAT I DESERVED
Fuck off. Dave was hilarious.
Then he bought that fucking garage in the Hamptons just so he could say I'm in the Hamptons too morherfucker to stern.
He has the insecurities of a 12 year old girl.
as someone who has gone through the patrice playlist like 5 times, episodes 1 to about 35 require constant skipping through stern complaining, it gets really bad around 15
That's basically everyone.
I don't think any guests ever hated Stern or outright agreed with Opie, since he was obviously another show they'd like to try and promote on to a large audience and just didn't have any shitty experiences with them.
It's like Opie and Anthony bitching about their bosses or whatever. No one else is going to really have that experience with them or feel the same way. So they're just bitching to an audience who doesn't really want to hear it.
Things never changed with the Stern hate, either. Nothing escalated. Nothing progressed or got fixed. No specific incidents really came up to differentiate it.
Everyone just had to sit through "I hate Stern. He doesn't like us I hate him. He does 'stuff behind the scenes' man. I hate him I can't say what, but he does, trust me. The company likes him more than us. I hate him Hoo Hoo Robin. I hate him."
Just, fucking why.
Opie definitely blows goats, but it's become so obvious how all 3 of them were leaning into the production staff. Sam was alright before he started getting more than 5 total minutes of air time, and the best days of the show were when Steven C and Danny were running things off air, while Sam Erock and Travis touched each other's peckers.
There's plenty to like in the Ron and Fez stuff towards the end. When Fez chimes in and it isn't bitching about his problems or therapists or whatever, it's usually a good contribution. His good was still good. You just got a lot less of it.
That's why the clips come in handy I suppose.
Both shows tried to shit on the interns or production staff too hard when they did something wrong. It always came across as cringey. Trying too hard to be edgy or mean or seem like "the boss" and often blowing the shit way out of proportion. Besides, like, the Foundry watermark I don't know if I ever really agreed with any of the shows railing on an intern or whoever for 20 minutes.
Don't think I heard the one about Ron getting pissed at a PD for Fez, might go look for that right now. Saw the writing on the wall I guess.
Ron was stubbornly protective of Fez for a while though, like he could do no wrong. Coddled. Ron sure changed pace though.
He was an Irish retard that'd do anything to get on air. That's funny at first then it just became sad. Less Dave is more for me.
>I could have been a model!!
Exactly. Ive only gone through the whole thing once but something stopping me doing a second run is i remember how annoying the stern bashing got
Yeah, sorry i cant remember the actual name of the clip but im sure its "Ron argues with mamagement on air" or something like that. I liked Ron but as you say he really was to blame for coddling Fez so much. Its fucking insane listening to some of Fez's on air breakdowns and knowing that he still would continue to stay on the air for another 4 or 5 years.
I cant remember much of R&F shitting on interns compared to O&A but it was ALWAYS because Fez had fucked up in some way. Theres a clip of Ron giving Pepper shit because he came back from an ad break while Ron was put of the studio and Fez just stuttered and gulped his way through live reads for 3 minutes. Like how dare Pepper expect Fez of the Ron & FEZ show to be able to carry the show by himself for a few minutes. Again more coddling and look where it left him. Fez is retired and Ron has to do a show with his annoying daughter.
for me, its anthony cumia
He's going full Italian
>Hold on, hold on, hold on....we got Snowy on the line now...SNOWAAAAAAAYYYY
He was a funny retard and he brought plenty of laughs to the show. That irish retard was practically Ron's cohost for years because of how useless Fez was and he got shit for it from people saying he was just trying to take airtime away from Fez.
And what happened when Ron asked Dave to stay in the back answering phones to give Fez more airtime? Fez would lock up because Mikey D had said something mean to him 3 days ago
This it? Closest that came up with the name but haven't listened to it yet.

When I first started listening to R&F I thought it was just a bit, or that they kept Fez around despite all the breakdowns because they thought it made good radio every time it happened and people listened for it.
But just the sheer fucking volume of times it happens really dawns on you, how it's always the same and obviously shows he's slipping in to sheer fucking madness, how he isn't particularly happy with his job, that he isn't contributing much at all to the show, and that fans are often calling in to bitch about Fez not talking or what he would always talk about, yet they still kept him around for a long time despite this just continuing to happen. It really is just insane.
R&F had quite their fair share of it. Earl fucking up and being lazy and would be a punching bag for whatever slight a lot. There was Pepper or Dave or someone playing the wrong song when Sonny Boy Williamson (i think) came in that took over the discussion after. Fez himself got angry and yelled at interns a lot. Like you said, often because of his own fuck up.
That one of Pepper coming back is especially aggravating to me though.
And yeah. Fuck Gail and her big tits.
But no one from back then really does anything good anymore. YKWD can throw out a good show still I guess. All the other hosts and comedians went to shit mostly.
Quinns a saint I guess. I still like DiPaolo but he went paywall for most of his show.
Apparently it is
I understand this is before it was a persistent problem but it's really hard to listen to with the hindsight
>No one ever gives more than Fez does here
