Understanding some anime does not make you smart. It's not hard to understand what the messages are. Evangelion is the anime equivalent of young adult fiction. If you've only ever seen a puddle I guess a pond must seem deep.

Symbolism, meanings and themes do not make a good show, they are just the icing on the cake. Characters, plot, dialogue etc etc are all far more important. Eva relies on it's artsy presentation and knee-deep themes to trick people like you into thinking it is some kind of masterpiece. It is not. You just defend it because you see yourself in that sad, pathetic loser Shinji. Any normal person cannot relate to someone so pathetic but you can. People that identify with Eva that much must therefore be as pathetic as the characters within, and have struggles as meaningless as the ones presented in the anime. There's a distinction between understanding the show and picking up on every little easter egg and detail straight after your first viewing. I doubt most people picked up on every little detail since most of eva is left purposefully vague. The general themes and messages are pretty easy to understand however if you are not focusing on all the intrigue of how the world works, who the angels are etc (which would have been a much more interesting angle for the show to go by imo). The show is trippy as hell and I don't blame people for not understanding the general plot on first viewing, but as Eva fans repeat all the time anyway, that's not the point of the show apparently.

My point has nothing to do with how easy/ hard the anime is for people to understand anyway. I understood everything and I still found it boring and shit. I didn't like any of the characters, and fundamentally in a show about the inner trauma of said characters, this stops me from having any enjoyment in the show as a whole.

If Eva had combined the intrigue of the world with decent, well written, likeable characters AND all the symbolism, messages and themes, it could have been a masterpiece in my eyes. As it was, from my point of view only the themes/ messages/ symbolism were well done. I just found it boring- the last episodes especially. I don't care about that stupid cunt Asuka's mommy problems, I simply don't give a fuck. Why should I? She was nothing but a bitch through the whole fucking show.
