After Game of Thrones ended this show and Vikings were raved about everywhere online as great shows to fill the void but are absolute garbage in comparison to S1-S4 of Thrones. It’s like finishing a steak dinner then being told McDonalds is just as good. How are people honestly this stupid?

yes. just don't go in expecting world literature. easy prose but detailed battle descriptions against a historically accurate backdrop with fictional main characters. Also his sympathies lie with the pagans, which is fine by me.

Yes. Vikings gets kind of trashy in the later seasons, like a fast food version of medieval kino, but it's enjoyable. Last Kingdom has a low budget and is really obscure but it's kino and efficient with its budget.

Yes I have and they are embarrassing. These shows are literally made for low IQ blue collar workers. Easily digestible, a self-insert main character, embarrassing acting with everybody just phoning it in, especially the viking actors who actually make me embarrassed to be danish desu. The Vikings at least had some fast food philosophising and interesting character dynamics with Athelstan and while still garbage, it beats the Last Kingdom

This identity crisis bullshit goes back farther than that, sixty years of people being fed the idea buying mass produced garbage = happiness has led to an entire generation scrambling for anything to define themselves by that doesn't come with a price tag. The budget doesn't mean anything if you don't use it correctly. All battle scenes in Vikings are horrible Hollywood brawls, at least Last Kingdom attempts doing something resembling shieldwalls.

I mean, isn't the show quite faithful? I read the synopsis on Wikpedia and don't seem too different. Seems like biggest chance was that Uthred and his priest friend act the governors of London from very early on, meanwhile the show just visits London very briefly during season 2. Dunno why, I guess it's cheaper to shoot on Uthred's farm than in other location?

It's pretty faithful but stuff changes here and there.
Like Uthtred's hired by Alfred to help build his Navy. He gets stabbed mid way into Edington and doesn't really do any crazy shenanigans there. Slade's arc is totally different as are the Viking Brothers.
It's little things but they stick out if you watched the show then read the books. It's also been a bit since I read it too.
