The only way the fast mecha meme ever works is in real robot shows like Gundam or Macross where it's basically Top Gun in space with robots instead of fighters because of some future macguffin like Cherenkov radiation or 50' tall aliens that suddenly makes a 6-story tall melee combat mech a viable combat strategy.
When you go from 6-story robots to 30-story robots, though, plodding and slow is the only way to go (other than in non-Rebuild Evangelion where it only makes sense because they're not actually robots but instead are reverse-engineered piloted clones of the telekinetic god-aliens that were patterned off of the progenitor race that seeded all life in the galaxy etc etc etc, and even then, it gets retarded in the rebuilds.)
