If you stop pretending it had a message and just see it as a comic book origin story, it's fine.

It's really not trying to be Taxi Driver. It borrows some of the narrative but it's not trying to compete.. it's just a fucking comic book movie.

It was genuinely good. Just weak dialogue and the forced Wayne scenes held back an otherwise competent movie.

It's gorgeously filmed, yet amateurishly directed; each meticulous, airless shot is, on its own, competently composed and lit, but, like a sequence of big words strung cumgrously together, they don’t ever form a rhythm of unique style. It has a filmic vocabulary and references (and sometimes straight-up purloins from) myriad other movies. It never finds a voice, or anything to say.
The depiction of mental illness or rather, “mental illness,” an ambiguous, minacious malady is as generic as my off-brand Wellbutrin. This is dishonest filmmaking, with its boisterous music roaring relentlessly and Phoenix’s agonized performance. There’s nothing genuine in the manufactured misery, which, from the opening scene, is so devoid of humanity (it has no heart; its veins flow with food dye). It’s not empathy to use someone’s anguish to make your Serious Film™. Consider Cassavettes’s A Woman Under the Influence, a film that cares deeply for its characters and shares moments of pain out of love; that film is pervaded by a sense of unease and instability because it empathizes with its characters, as if their problems seep into and influence the filmmaking, whereas Joker is discomforting in a skin-deep way, like a rash
Politically and ideologically Laodicean, the film peddles in pedantries and caricatures (Thomas Wayne could be a talking head on Fox), and has a penchant for sophomoric nihilism.
Phoenix gangly and gaunt, pallid, his face bedraggled and etched with wrinkles like scars from a knife is better than pretty much anyone at exterminating internal pain. His nervous laugh, face contorting into a look of agony as his lips furl insolently, is a fear of physical acting, and deserves a better film.
