He is funny in a natural, unplanned and off the cuff way, I think rich vos put it best because I heard it from him first, there are comics, and there are writers. comics think on their feet and come with shit quick, and can barb and riff on the spot on any given subject, writers on the other hand don't more often then not, they ruminate on a joke or something that could be funny to be "clever, smart, witty" but lose the humor in doing so and come off as arrogant and insecure. mullen is a comic through and through, haven't heard his stand up, but from some cum town episodes he is unbelievably based, like the beyond belief skit at 6:00 minutes

Another example I can give about the writer/comic thing is rich vos, nick dipaolo, mike birbiglia on opie and anthony, you can find the rest, but in the episode mike starts going into his written material for laughs, vos and dipaolo point it out and mike keeps doing it, in a sense birbligia isn't engaged with what was currently happening in the room, because he is a writer.
