television is basically dead. the ratings for a show would have to be like 100k viewers total before it got canned.

Last season averaged at 800k so it aint far from it. I think they should put them in middle school.

It's fairly cheap to make. The writers have no interest in other projects, like all the Simpson writers that left around the late 90s.

It got handed off to Sci-Fi and both networks hated it. It was a mess to produce. If it saved them, they resented the show for it

It saved them and they probably did resent them. Most likely because it too up 2 hour blocks.
When Comedy Central was very first starting in early days it was a time when networks could go away. MST3K saved it from a very real risk of cancellation and is pretty much the show that got the network started.

But it seems like Matt and Trey have given up. They probably wanted to stop 5 years ago but the studio keeps renewing it so they just keep pumping out seasons. I like the show but the last good season was 18.

I just watched the last season and I found it pretty good, the newer seasons before that were great though. I think South Park is still fresh. The introduction to PC principal, member berries, Cartman's girlfriend, the school constantly getting shot up were kino. The scene where Catman snaps and threatens to shoot up the school, or when he finds out where kyle is dating Heidi are legit fucking hilarious.
